Re: The resurgence of Steve Howe

Forgot to mention it before, but Howe has always struck me as a 'working man's musician', ie. he does BETTER the more he plays! This applies to almost any skill, of course, but Howe seems to genuinely want to get out there and play as much as possible, and I really admire that, being someone who doe...

The resurgence of Steve Howe

(Hi all, it's been a while!) I've been on a bit of a Yes kick these last few days... started with digging out a Trevor Rabin live album to burn for a co-worker, actually, but then I pulled out a YesWest compilation, and it's gone from there... I've been flipping through various things on YouTube, an...

Re: Best CDS of 2008

I'm in the same boat as some other people - I didn't buy too much this year, and some of the stuff I DID buy came out in 2007 (or I thought it did at first, until I realized how quickly 2008 went by). :p Anyway, I submit the following. I notice this is the first year I can remember where I didn't co...

Re: Steven Wilson-Insurgentes

I'll preface this with saying I only listened to it once, but oddly enough, I wasn't too thrilled with the album. Too many songs lacked any identifiable (some may say "hooky") parts, and some suffered from what sounded to me like experimentation or dissonance just for their own sake... my favorites ...

Re: A bit of spam for my new album!

Appreciated the comments guys! I have yet to really do any shows/gigs for the disc (part of the mixed blessing of working an afternoon shift at my job), but 2009 will be the year I plan to at least do SOMETHING for it!

Re: No one is indispensable!

Hmmm, I wonder if that Talk-era lineup, with Rick in it, could happen... ;) At this point, nothing would surprise me. I will say that, from watching the YouTube clips, Benoit IS a very good replacement - he's not an exact clone, but sings well enough that he doesn't need to be! Also, as a fellow mus...

Re: Is Alice Cooper ripping off Porcupine Tree?

Hmmm... seems to me that a concept album about a murderer/serial killer is a rather general premise anyway. Many people (myself included) noticed how the visual themes for In Absentia borrowed VERY heavily from the movie Seven, which you could argue is just as much a source as anything. Oh, and don'...

A bit of spam for my new album!

(I hope I'll get a long-time poster exemption for this... otherwise I expect to be promptly banned! :p ) I haven't been on these boards much over the last couple years... many reasons for that, but much of it is to do with the fact I've been getting my 'musical self' off the ground. I'm not sure if ...

Re: Yessong Of The Week: Endless Dream

Yes, fair enough that if it GENUINELY isn't doing it for people, then that's their right. I'm not trying to convince anyone; my only bone of contention was with the idea that if something IS causing an emotional reaction, it gets written off as 'contrived' even though the person admits the section i...

If Magnification is the last Yes album...

...then I think it's a very good way to go out. I've always been in the camp that loved this album; admittedly, years after it came out, it doesn't hold my interest quite as much as it used to, but I still think it's a great end-of-career album from a legendary band! Without going into detail too mu...

Re: Yessong Of The Week: Endless Dream

Well, I can't say I'm terribly surprised about the negative reactions, and even I can admit a lot of the criticism is valid (the song is disjointed, yep - so are all the Yes epics until you get used to them)! But when it gets down to it, I still think "Endless Dream" is absolutely brilliant. I don't...

Re: No Man

No-Man are absolutely brilliant, and Flowermouth is MY favorite too! :D The airy, rhythmic feel of early 90's dance/pop/rock mixed with the texture of prog... what an odd, fantastic combination! Returning Jesus and Together We're Stranger are both really great, too... in fact ALL of these albums I'd...

Re: Tour Cancelled!

Speaking as someone who didn't buy tickets, I have to say that whatever your take on this situation, it reflects VERY badly on the band, as well as the obvious factors of whether they'll be able to continue... counting the More Drama Tour in 2005 (which WAS basically a Yes tour in all but official n...

Re: Has anyone an opinion on this tour's ticket prices?

Well, I'm glad I see lots of other folks agreeing with me that these prices are outrageous!! The cheapest seats here are $70 (before "service charges", which means it'll total closer to $85), and that's for nosebleeds from the upper level of a hockey arena. When I saw the price range, despite the fa...

Re: Progressive Nation Tour

Just got back tonight from the Vancouver show... FANTASTIC. I missed 3. Got to the venue and into my seat and I think 30 seconds passed before they finished and wrapped it up. Sounded somewhat interesting, and I did catch a glimpse of their unusual instrumental configuration. BTBM almost put me to s...

Re: What an "Awaken" ripoff!!

So, uhh, has anyone listened to "Midas Touch" yet? :p My intention wasn't to start a giant debate about the methodology behind notes and music... Oh, and this isn't a case of "in my day, etc" (mainly because I'm only 24), and neither is it going after a band for a passage that sounds somewhat like a...

What an "Awaken" ripoff!!

Anyone heard of Pallas? (I know some of you have.)

"The Cross and the Crucible", their album from 2001. Track 8 "Midas Touch". 8:05 or so, for about the next minute... I mean, I realize it's a deliberate homage, but really guys!! :p

**does a double take**

**rubs eyes**

VANCOUVER?? GM Place?? Wow, if they're playing a 20,000-seat hockey arena, I guess they really ARE shooting for the stars this time!

I will go purely because I DON'T want to take a chance this is their last tour! :D

Re: The era of free music is upon us

I think Kalingzeye gets it, completely!! The de-commodification of art will, I truly believe, be one of the best things to happen to humanity in the 21st century. Art, when it gets down to it, is for us to be able to 'communicate' with one another, and create understanding, or at least cause an emot...

Re: NEIL YOUNG LOOSES FAITH IN MUSIC

Maybe we're wandering a bit off-topic here, but speaking as both a musician and a fan of a lot of music, this new 'frontier' excites me! The very technology that has caused many people to be more casual about the music they listen to has ALSO allowed many more people to get their music out to people...

Re: "YES" Tour this summer with School of Rock Kids

Have to admit... if they get ANYONE to replace Rick, it should be one of his sons (and being as Oliver's overall background is much more in 'prog' than Adam's, I think he's the best choice). My overall feeling.... ehhh, I don't like knowing that Jon has what sounds like a chronic throat/breathing pr...

Re: Dream Theater, Systematic Chaos

Picked this one up myself a few days ago after having heard all of it when it came out... I've never been too big into DT but I like this disc! :) Well balanced between metal and progressive (and the metal is VERY good - "Constant Motion" is a dead ringer for vintage Metallica in the verses!), and I...

Re: Fear of a Blank Planet review

Interesting points that Stout makes, and I DO think maybe Wilson is overgeneralizing a bit... but at the same time, the rather dark picture of many young people is an accurate one. Being a relatively young person myself, I have to say that it scares me at times just HOW absorbed we can all get into ...

I don't really listen to jazz other than him (not counting the "standards" and classic tunes, but not any other single artist), which almost makes me feel guilty for not delving into it a bit more. :p I own about ten of his albums I think.... faves are 'The Road to You' whi...

WOW. I'm impressed! :p Who did Yes talk to to get THAT kind of exposure?

That commercial (which MANY folks will see) is the kind of thing that can revive awareness in a band... if I were them I'd capitalize on it and get up to something in 2007!

You know, despite not ever being a big fan of Tales in general, I have to admit that the lyrics on "Revealing Science..." are rather brilliant. I may be in the minority here, but aside from 'On the Sunday of Life' I think Stupid Dream is actually the weakest PT album.
