A Good, Rippin' Debate

If it's a big debate that everyone wants, how about the following: Yes took a good step bringing Wakeman back - but by not having Rabin, they are blowing probably their last chance at revitalizing the band! (I hasten to add that I am not saying I agree with this premise - I just thought it would gen...

Good Rippin' Debate II: The Halo and the Horns

From the previous topic I started, it is clear that there are Halo and Horns issues here (as there are in any Yes forum, or any music forum, period). For the sake of clarity, I would like to remind the group mind that 1) I have stated few of my own actual preferences or premises, apart from saying t...

We've Seen Our Last Yes Epic

Apologies to the Group Mind. It was pointed out to me that Rabin discussion is already quite deep, no need for more. So I thought I would try to appease EricBliss's call for debate with another subject. For those who love "CTTE," "GoD," "Awaken," the various components of Tales, nothing would satisf...

Perhaps - but the world-wide fan base has been shrinking over the past few years, and album sales are particularly low, with MAG selling less than 15,000 copies in their own homeland. Pleasing us die-hards isn't enough - to remain viable, the band must reverse this trend and acquire new fans, don't ...

Ha! Thank you, Yaddict, but I wanted to introduce a debate, not start a Flame War! It's a pretty limited discussion, anyway, once you strip away personal preference. One can debate Steve and Trevor's stylistic choices, but it is pointless to debate skills - that's like debating hair color ... I do d...

WOW. Okay, it's a debate now, for sure. I don't mean to be slow, but I'm not acquainted with a lot of the personal positions here. Please bear with me. perpetual changer is declining to comment because her opinions are well-known? PC, I do not know your views on these matters - I would be pleased to...

In my post above, I obviously mean to say "Wakeman's keyboard sounds," not Rabin's. Why is it okay to dislike Rabin and Sherwood but not Howe? If one can be a Yes fan and dislike Rabin and Sherwood, there should be no reason in principle why someone could not prefer their work and instead dislike Ho...

Hello, PC! By all means, do not comment if you are not at the moment compelled - I look forward to reading your views in the future! I have noted that in every Yes fan congregation, there are those who are not Rabin fans. I have also seen that debate on the "Rabin issue" can be very spirited! I agre...

IngnoZac makes an excellent point. Please excuse my lapse of clarity here. In service of the point I was making, I should have said, "The power trio of Howe, Squire and White assembled on that album (rock riffs most strongly resembling the hard rock/heavy metal of the day) that Yes had ever done." C...

Recent work, like the tunes on MAG, are more contemplative (with the exception of Spirit of Survival, I guess), but I agree, Renato, I want to hear them really cut loose, and I believe they still have it in them!

Greetings, Ed Schaum! Point of clarification, based on your post - speaking of those who idolize or despise this musician or that, my remark was general - across all internet forums, all bands, etc - and not specific to this site, where i have only become acquainted with a few viewpoints. So I apolo...

Hello again, Yaddict. I am glad you defended the band's continuation after Union. I agree it would have been terrible if they had packed it in then! I believe, however, that the Howe/Rabin debate is only tired and unnecessary IF you are primarily a Howe fan (which I am - but I do not confine myself ...

I am pleased to do so, PC. But I did not want to muddy the water earlier! My own view is from the broader perspective of the pop/rock world in general (in civilian life I am one of those annoying music journalists!). So for me it is not Yes-A vs. Yes-B, but all versions of Yes in comparison with the...

Yaddict and PC, I apologize. There are many, many topics on the site and I have read thru only a few - so I am unaware of what has already been discussed at length!

Next time I will try to suggest something more current! Thanks for your input and patience!

LOL! PC, I must agree wholeheartedly with your first two points! On your point three, however, let me offer whatever encouragem...

Hello, psychopomp95! Thanks for your input! An additional point about Howe in the early 80s: I'm a monster Steve Howe fan, I think he's one of the finest musicians of the past century - but Asia was just a misstep for all. I have tried so hard to get into those first three albums, and it's just not ...

A not-so-lost variation that may actually happen would be Squire-Sherwood (Conspiracy) with Rabin ... and with Rabin, they might attract Wakeman ... and since, by definition, this Conspiracy would have to occur during a Yes break, then ... White?

In the largest critic's environment - the daily newspaper - criteria are simple. A critic must be 1) very knowledgable about the subject matter; 2) reliable; 3) a VERY fast writer. Most critics satify these criteria or they don't last long. What most fans have trouble with is content. With regard to...

Actually, Yaddict, I'm pretty up-to-speed on the worldview of the teenage girl - I have one, and another teen (boy), and a pre-teen who is also nuts about the boy bands. By the way, Yaddict, I think your habit of checking out opinion on new music in Amazon.com and similar sources is a really great practice and one that should become increasingly wide-spread; I think this capability is a big plus for the advancement of music in general!

guilddigger, I find myself in complete agreement: critiques of that nature are so unattractive, and serve no purpose. At the very least, a critic who is negatively disposed toward some genre which may be (to the critic) no longer relevent has a duty to convey that the audience enjoyed the performanc...

If by selling out you mean "going commercial," I would note that lots of the progressives seemed to do this in the mid-80s - Genesis being the extreme example. And ELP became Emerson Lake and Powell (not quite as extreme); Tull did Crest of a Knave, with its drum-machine-driven "Steel Monkey," but w...
