UK YES TRIBUTE BAND YEP'S - FIRST GIG 'REVIEW'

Postby Dr_Yes » Mon Sep 23, 2002 8:34 pm

The Band Club St Austell is a relatively small social club (cap. 300) situated in Cornwall, one of the backwaters of southwest England, where live music is not only still enjoyed - despite the worst effects of karaoke - but actively encouraged.

Around 100 doughty people turned up for Yep's first full length gig and although a few technical problems threatened to mar the evening - such as me forgetting to bring the 'Firebird Suite' walk-on music - they seemed to enjoy our interpretations on Yes' music. At least those that I spoke to afterwards were very complimentary and enthusiastic, saying things like 'we never thought we'd see a Yes tribute act coz the music's so tough to nail' etc. etc.

Our set list was we hope varied enough to appeal to the non-Yes fan and Yes fan alike:

opening - Firebird Suite
Siberian Khatru
Long Distance Runaround
The Fish - bass solo
Astral Traveller
Nous Sommes Du Soleil (fragment)
Lightning Strikes
And You And I
Wonderous Stories
Make It Easy
Owner of a Lonely Heart
Hold On
Your Move/All Good People
Time And A Word (fragment)
Rob - keyboard solo
Awaken
Hearts

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(encore)
Roundabout
Starship Trooper
We're now working on adding some stuff. I'd like to move things around a bit as having the Fish so early seemed to lose a few people when we were just grabbing their attention but hey, you live and learn! We plan to add Your Is No Disgrace, Close to the Edge and/or The Gates of Delirium, something from Drama and maybe Real Love from Talk. See - we're nothing if not all inclusive. Hope the Rabinites are pleased that we're not overlooking his contribution or that era. Rick also wants to do Leave It, but I think he's mad. I'd like CttE or GoD to sit somewhere in the early part so we've got two biggies balanced out - but we'll see.
I can't really review my own gig as it wouldn't be very accurate - Dave played brilliantly etc. - but what I will say is that we held it all together and received a generous and enthusiastic response. Yeah - sure there were mistakes. Personally, I flubbed part of the 12-string solo in Awaken and bust a string in the solo of Hold On, which kind of led to the whole song going off the rails, but we saved it and got to the end.
Bottom line, it was great fun to do if a long day (didn't get home till after 3am having left at 11.30am that morning). Will hopefully be able to post some pics on our website soon + some reviews. I watched a video made of part of the show yesterday and the overall effect looked good - especially Rob in his silver Wakeman cape (hee hee). I hope that this gig is the first of many and that some of the UK Yes fans will be able to pop along to see us in the (near) future.
Doc Y.
Thanks for your note of support Guild. Maybe one day we'll be lucky enough to venture into Europe and we can meet up and say hi. And I'd be delighted as you could come up and play with us on Starship Trooper. <img src=pix/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>
Thanks Simon. It was a bit scary and a bit skin of the teeth in places, but we made it!
