It's steel guitar...just like he uses on "And You and I" and "Soon".
The YesYears documentary has a great clip of him in the studio recording it.

Sincerely

Hey, which guitar did he use on there when he wasn't using the steel? I know it was the Telecaster on Relayer, but I don't know if that was it on G4T1.

I'm not sure. I was always under the impression that he only played steel on it. I'll have to listen again for any overdubs. Maybe a Strat? - I think he was using it a lot on the album.

Probably would need to ask Steve himself. Have you ever seen his book? I've never seen it, but that's probably the most likely place that would tell you. I don't think there's any other guitar on the track though

I noticed it only says Steel Guitar in the instrument list for Steve in the liner notes of GFTO, so I don't think he plays anything else on the track.

I just watched the SLO video a few nights ago, which includes the tune GftO. Just straight steel all the way through. No other guitars hanging on his shoulder--looks kind of odd for Steve.

I think GftO is the only Yes tune that has just steel for guitars.

As for other guitars that Steve played on the album, I'm not sure, but I have seen a lot of pictures from that era of him playing his Rickenbachers. I do believe he used the 12-string on "Awaken." That solo at the beginning was on the 12-string(!), and I've read where he said it was one of the most difficult and most satisfying solos he's ever recorded (or something like that).

Wow, that's quite a neat accomplishment...specially for Steve-O

I have a poster of the band shot live during the GFTO tour...Chris is playing his triple-neck and Steve has his Rick 12-string, so I'm pretty sure they're playing Awaken. I think he's using a Steinberger 12 now (I know he did on the Union tour, I don't know about now).

That is a great solo, I've got the first part of it transcribed if anyone's interested. I'm still working on it.

I think your right RANCAN.I have a copy of Steves book [I was at his book signing in London in 94]The only ref. to G4T1 is that he used the fender dual6 professional all the way through that track.BRILLIANT!!.<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

Steve has used thousands of guitars... you can see by the Yessongs video, that even with few songs in Yes, he hardly ever used the same guitar for two songs! I think that the guitars he used in the late 70's don't fit him: the Tele, the Strato and the Les Paul ones. He needs a big one, with a hollow or semi-hollow body, because that's the way Steve "greatest sounds ever" were played. The use of 175 and the double neck are extensive in early Yes (with Steve, of course).

If you check out the Yesyears video when they are rehearsing Parallels
in the studio Steve is playing a Les Paul. They may be recording but I'm not sure...

I think that's rehearsal footage. I believe he uses his Strat on Parallels..I'll check his book and see if he mentions which one he uses. I think he uses the Les Paul on Turn of the Century (I think being the operative word)

Yeshoo?

There's no control, for instance, most of people say what they want to say, offending everyone else... I mean, they don't respect your opinion... get it?

I've been to other forums for games that sometimes degenerate into name-calling and stuff like that..
Sometimes it's amusing to read when you're an outsider, but probably pretty annoying to be on the receiving end of it

I've noticed two things about message boards
1) Sarcasm and humor are hard to get across in the written word, leading to a lot of misunderstandings or overreactions. I try to avoid being sarcastic in posts for just that reason, and I live and breath on sarcasm...

2) People are a lot braver when they're behind a keyboard and not talking directly to you
