FYI, this isn't a chat room, it's a forum....

I'm well aware of that. What makes you think I believe it's a chat room? Do you play an instrument?

Maybe I was expecting something like: "hi, I play guitar too, but nothing like Howe..."
You know, like musicians chatting through the forum with one another.

Hi Caryindy,

Welcome to YEStalk. I for one am an avid Steve Howe fan. Ran a Yes tribute for a while (YEP), which was great fun but hard to keep going as there weren't too many venues who would take a punt on us in the slightly retarded South West of England.

Nonetheless I spent two years of my life on it and live I most enjoyed playing Yours Is No Disgrace and Awaken. Since it folded though I have lost faith in all things musical for a while and have sold most of my gear. Am definitely taknig a back seat on playing but do try to keep an eye on helping people's requests etc. or talk about things Yes related or bands in general. Part of the problem is that there are kind of two forums for this sort of thing here and Yessongs is also about tabs and such like, so we may be split over two boards.

Anyway, enough of that. What's your background? Are you a guitarist or bassist? Let us know.

Doc Y.

Nice to meet you Dr. Yes. I see how you have helped others on the forum… bravo! You’re an example of how it should be done.

I’ve been playing guitar for over thirty years and would say that Steve Howe is one of my major influences. I too have since hung up the whole Yes tribute thing, but I still love to play the music. I can play bass, drums, keys too. Well, I can fool a lot of people apparently. I would only call myself a guitarist, although I play other instruments.

Back in 1987 or so, I was in a very good band that truly captured the feel of Yes. Unfortunately, it’s hard to keep 5 guys focused and we had a revolving door on the keyboard and drum seat. Ironically, the vocals were the strongest part of the band. Being biased, I won’t comment on the guitar playing. We did all the cool stuff, including Sound Chaser, CTTE, Going for the One (in the original key), etc.

For the past few years, the focus has been the engineering side of my recording studio. I don’t do much playing now. I recently bought a drum kit for the studio and as a exercise in working on the drum sound, I’ve been recording a cover of Siberian Khatru. http://www.artistcollaboration.com/~caryindy/s-clip.wma I got the bass part of Siberian from a guy on Chris Squire’s site and I built the song around his clip. It’s been fun remembering all the parts. Although I know the keyboard parts, I generally don’t practice and can’t see myself playing the Harpsichord solo in real time. I was hoping to come across a keyboard player that has recording capabilities who would be interested in doing the key parts. We’ll see.

Thanks for the nice welcome.

Wow - tasty playing. Puts my effort to shame on the solo/link . And you play all the other stuff too. Splendid stuff. Very authentic tone too.

Oh..OK, don't be pissy. I just thought you did because you made a very candid/non posty type comment.

Hi. I'm Harrison. I'm 17, I've been playing guitar for 10 years, and Steve is my one influence and inspiration. I'm in a progressiveband, and do a lot of Steve style stuff. I'd like to think I reflect his playing a lot.

Cool Harrison. Does your band play original music? Do you have a link to some of your music? I'd love to hear your guitar playing.

Traffic in this area comes only in spurts. I produced my on solo CD a couple years ago, but they're mostly taking up closet space . Some tracks available for listening:

For the present, I'm trying awfully hard to kick my playing up a level, taking some weekly instruction from a jazz teacher, ... and learning (sloowly) to sight read. Instant gratification, it ain't. Been nine weeks thus far, and a year of it seems an awfully long way away.

Guitarist since about 15. Have played "Mood for a Day" and "Horizon's" since I was about 17 in 1980. Can play this piece blindfolded and after 10 beers. Played solo at numerous venues. Played "Freebird" once with another guitarist in a small club. No drums. Never really played w/ full band. Made numerous amateur recordings. Do some movie music themes. Can play some keyboard lines. Fairly comfortable with slow blues on electric, which I seem to have a feel for. Do a pretty mean and convincing flamenco. Once got a gig off playing my originals to manager of club.

No, not selling anything. It's a short clip, even a dialup shouldn't take too long.

Best wishes with your playing!

I still have this idea that when I have enough good gear and get a good repertoire of prog and classic rock favorites together, nail down a drummer, bassist, and keyboardist (and one of us to attempt vocals), I'll get a good prog tribute band going.
By that time I'll be like early pushing 44 or so, and like now it may be hard to get gigs. Bars now are dominated by DJ music and hip hop. Where's the venues?
If I got a windfall of cash to burn I might consider it. Time and money.

Not another Guitar player

Yes,another guitar player that has been touched(in the head)by this guy called Howe.
Before being touched I was busy playing all that I could get from Aerosmith to Alice Copper to ZZ-top,Then BAMMMMM I was hooked.
How many of you guitar players got sick and tired of people asking you "hey man,can you play stairway to heven because jimi page is the best"My reply would be "Mood for the day"
Then there would be the argument that Howe can't rock,So I would fire up Sound Chaser intro or Release. That somtimes shut them up.
Yes has changed my life for better or worse.I strive in my writting to be orignal and fresh.
thanks for listening.

Klatu,
Where are located? I'm trying to get some musicians in the Boston area together to play some Yes tunes, and I've heard from a singer, a drummer, and several bass players, but no keyboardists.
Are you, by any chance, in or around Boston?

Let me know.

Hey listen, all of you YES musicians out there....

I wanted you to know that you're not alone in your struggles to find "like-minded" players in your area.

Try finding "Progressive Rock Musicians" in coastal South Carolina, who are interested in playing YES music.....

They're very, very rare... I can tell ya' that, for a fact. :(

Hello. I'm Pam. I'm a guitarist as well as a composer..and I sing a bit, too.

I've been playing electric guitar for about thirty years. I've studied classical guitar and jazz guitar as well. I love to compose because there is nothing better then hearing real musicians play something that originated between my ears.
