Yeah, Santana, thanks. I've been studying his technique on his Supernatural dvd-really cool. They have a mini-camera mounted on the guitar headstock at times for some great right hand shots.

I can play just like who I want without too much difficulty... the one remaining exception is probably Pat Metheny! And I guess Eddie Van Halen, too.
But playing LIKE someone isn't my priority. I want to feel inspired as far as my own music goes, and I haven't truly felt inspired or excited by writing stuff in a _real_ long time. It's tough not to get discouraged...

Postby Dr_Yes » Mon Jul 26, 2004 11:54 am

Like many, I can mimic a lot of my favourite guitarists quite well, but when I play as me, well it sounds shit - ha ha ha.

I just don't have it.

In another world I'd be a guitar god who could switch seamlessly between playing styles and have wanky music critics likening my playing to an effortless blend of Steve Howe, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Alvin Lee, Jimmy Page, Martin Carthy, Jerry Donahue, Barney Kessel - but somehow managing to push the envelop and bring out new ideas for the guitar.

But back on Earth I am just another wannabee, crappy, second rate guitarist, playing crappy covers in the local crappy pub. Hence my long hiatus from playing (1yr and rising).

Good reply Psyco,Iwas going to say"I;d most like to play like myself"Not to be on a high horse but to play with all my influence's and channel them out through my own creativity.

A older player gave me some great advice when I was 24.He said it's time to turn off your influence's and be your self. What I learned most from Howe was not to sound like him but to create like him.
I belive that all the real Orignal stuff comes from a great pool where people that are open enough it just flows through.

Chris is a very unusual guy. He's got about 8 or 9 albums out, and a real nice underground following. He is deffinitely not main stream. He plays the most syncopated, alternate tuned, gut bucket music I've ever heard. He's been called the Robert Johnson of our times, and he has the songwriting chops of Dylan. If you can find it get his album Dirt Floor or his newest one Weed. This is just a guy with a guitar, his voice, his boot(he rigs up a mic in a wooden contraption for a thump effect), and he has more soul that a Southern Church Choir.

I already can play a lot of my favorite guitarist's material; at least several songs note for note. The secret is perserverence and the one day that your brain lights up and you actually HEAR those notes for the first time. It's happened with almost every song I've wanted to learn.
Don't fret about it,
And it will happen...

But, Pat Metheny's style is still incredibly difficult to play, plus finding all of those jazz scales! (How does he play that fast?)

Here's my favorite guitarists (not in order) and (for me) their most challenging material:

Steve Howe (Clap, YIND, America, Gates)
Pat Metheny (Stranger In Town, Third Wind)
Joe Satriani (Crushing Day, Mystical Potato Head)
Michael Schenker (Lights Out, Rock Bottom from Strangers)
Uli John Roth (The Sails Of Charon)
Ritchie Blackmore (Lazy, A Light In The Black)
Jeff Beck (Cause We've Ended As Lovers)
Jimmy Page (because it's all overdubbed, and one guitar can't play it all)
Robert Fripp (Frame By Frame, 21st Century Schizoid Man)
Johnny Marr (William, It Was Really Nothing)
Alex Lifeson (La Villa Strangiato, Freewill)

Anybody wanna jam?
