  • Beer is made from water, malt, hops and yeast. The type and amount of each influence the taste, colour and strength. Water is the main ingredient and the purer the water the better the beer.
  • Beer wasn't sold in bottles until 1850. Beer lovers would visit their local tavern with a special bucket, have it filled and then begin the merry journey home.
  • Beer, like all alcoholic drinks, is made by fermentation caused by bacteria feeding on the yeast cells, then defecating. This bacterial "poo" is the alcohol.
  • In 1996 Courage Brewery made a beer made from a recipe recovered by archaeologists from the walls of the tomb of Egyptian boy king Tutankhamen. The first bottle sold at auction for more than £3,500 - the highest price ever paid for a bottle of beer.
  • The first ale house punters in England used clay tankards with whistles baked into the rim or handle. When they needed a refill they used the whistle to get some service - hence the saying "Wet your whistle."
  • Beer is the second most popular drink in the world after tea - and the best selling adult drink in the world. In the US it outsells wine and liquor by seven to one.
  • UK beer sales reached their peak in 1979 at a staggering 15 BILLION pints. We now drink 29 million pints a day spending £15bn on beer.
  • Babylonian clay tablets from 4300 BC include detailed recipes for beer.
  • In Babylonia 4,000 years ago a bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink for a month after the wedding. Mead is a honey beer so it was the "Honeymonth" or "Honeymoon."
  • In ancient Mesopotamia (Modern day Iraq) tavern owners found guilty of over-charging patrons for beer were put to death by drowning.
  • "Rule of thumb" is a brewing term. Before the advent of thermometers brewers tested the temperature of their maturing brews with their thumbs. Too cold and the yeast wouldn't grow, too hot and it would die.
  • Belgium has the most individual beer brands - boasting 400 types.
