This belongs in Alternate Tunes ... see you there.

I'd love to give my opinion but I don't have it yet. Hopefully it will be in the mail tomorrow.

One place is at www.radiantrecords.com ... just go under the Spock's Beard link and you will find it there. You will want the 3 CD version as a Yes fan because the third disc has SB's cover of SSOTS.

I can't wait to buy this. New Flower Kings double disc in two more months too! WHoo hoo!!!

I'm waiting until I have the dough for the limited edition though, because even though I'm pumped to hear the new album (I heard its better than V, if so then we're in for a treat!) but I'm even more pumped to hear South Side. I don't have a cable modem anymore so I can't download it. To be honest I think these two are albums I'd want to actually purchase anyways.

You WILL want to purchase this.

I think it's the best thing I've heard from SB. I don't know all their stuff but it's by far the best out of what I've heard. Papa J played the entire album on his show so I had an advance preview and I must say, it's very cool.

The limited edition is what I got. As a fan you will most likely enjoy the cover of South Side of the Sky that is only available on the third disc.

I've never seen an album this nicely packaged. It comes as a little hardcover book with all the words on the inside pages and envelope pages in front and back for the two discs. The third disc comes in its own separate envelope, along with three album-cover stickers and a flyer with the "Snow" story.

If you are a fan of SB you will most definitely miss out if you don't purchase this one.

I only have 'Day For Night' so far, but ordered Snow (3CD version) from GFT ( www.gft-cyclops.co.uk ) today, and really looking forward to it thanks to what I've read here.

BTW, plugged GFT cos I've yet to find a more thorough prog mail order site. Worth checking out.

Ed, you are gonna love this concept album. I was always a bit underwhelmed by SB, but with this album they have joined the very best of prog bands.

Hi Mate, Great to here from you. I've applied for tickets for the Olympiakos match.

Interesting comparison. I initially thought that CD2 let the side down a bit, but in fact its a grower. I wish they hadn't included the ELP keyboard solo piece which adds nothing to the concept and would be better placed on a Keith Emerson tribute album. I would say that as a concept album this will probably stand up against Subterranea and Lamb Lies Down. There are quite a few Genesis influences. It's very cross Atlantic, in that, I hear a lot of early CSN&Y, also early Kansas on one track in particular. But hell, I love both of these bands. This is an awesome album, IMHO. Along with Vapor Trails, this makes for a great 2002 already.

Whew, I didn't realize it would be a METAL cover (not cheesy, just very heavy)! Great version of the song, it actually sounds like it COULD get played on the radio! And I liked the intro/outro of the 'other' Yes song... Almost sounds like it was written that way in the first place!
When I get home, I'm gonna put my MP3s of 'V' onto a CD, and if I like it I'll pick up Snow!

I, too, ordered the limited edition from Radiant Records. But I noticed that Amazon.com is also selling it. It is well worth it! Great CD's, really nice package. The "concept" thing really works here. The only other Spock's Beard CD I have is V - I bought it used just to sample Spock's Beard, and now I just love this band! Too bad I only discovered them just before Neal Morse left... Oh well, I still have the old CD's to go through, and I'm sure this talented band will go on.

You guys need to check out the new spocksbeard live dvd. It has a live show from holland on disc one. Disc two is the making of V. and disc three is a bonus audio thing with the ssots cover. I also recomend the transatlantic "building the bridge" video

I got this the other day and so far I'm not really impressed overall. My first couple listens through it sounded awesome but the quality rapidly depriciates with each listen.

First of all this concept sucks. The story of a kid who came from nothing and moves to NYC and becomes a rock star that can heal people, and on the way he has brushes with drugs and hookers, and meets a girl on the way that disses him. I mean drugs and hookers are cool and all but this is totally cliche. And worst of all it's a rock star based on Powder (that movie totally sucked).

Besides the lame concept the album does have some really good songs. Both Overtures are pretty damn cool. Looking For Answers is a nice song, and Snow's Night Out and Ladies And Gentlemen... are a lot of fun. I just don't understand the lame synthesizer solo on the latter track.

Wind at My Back and it's reprise are the highlights of the album, and Solitary Soul has a great guitar solo. Devil's Got My Throat is pretty solid too. Although there's a few more highlights the rest is pretty hit or miss. The lyrics to Freak Boy are even worse than the lyrics to Fuck You, from The Light. And Neal indulges in more embarassing vocalisms and lyrics than I've ever heard him before. The "I Liiiike it!" shout out in Welcome To NYC (not anything like the song about NYC that Genesis had on disc one of their 6th album that happened to be a double concept ) is pretty agitating.

Musically the album has some good stuff but the lyrics seem half ass in a lot of spots. Not the best.

I don't like this one, either. I never liked it.
The Overtures and 'Stranger in a strange land' are about the only great songs on the whole album.
The album itself is also far too long for this boring music.
The Only mistake so far for Spock.
I'll forget this one and stick with 'The Kindness of strangers' (their absolute best) and 'V' !!

There are plenty of good songs on both discs, SNOW is a great effort by SB. Your being way to critical, you think it's easy to write progressive rock, they play terrific on the CD. Therer are parts were Neal really lets go and gets a little crazy, I like that. The only shame is that Neal is gone and SNOW may never be toured. I recently got an SP concert video and they are really good live. Neal is such the front man for the band it will be hard to replace him if the really do carry on. I believe there is enough talent in the band hopefully they keep the Beard alive.

All I can think is that the band must be determined to re-write Genesis' history, to the letter... mind you, in order for that to happen, Neal Morse would have to become a big pop star in about ten years! But who knows?
As for SB, I have V on MP3 and I don't really find anything special about it. And Neal Morse has to have one of the most BLAND singing voices I've heard...!

Well Q-man, some of the songs are good but the lyrics and singing are what brings them down. I read through the lyric book today. BIG mistake. Devil's Got My Throat was the best track to me, but after I found out THIS is what he was saying it kinda ruined it for me:

Oh my God! Look what's become of me!
My best friend's a spider!
My girlfriend's a cardboard cutout I stole from Circuit City!

Now I can't even listen to it. And Welcome To NYC is also a good song but has bad words. This whole album is just stupid.

And dude if you listen to no other Spocks listen to V. Give Great Nothing a chance, if nothing else. I think thats their greatest achievement, and if you dont like that song then give up on them, seriously.

Eric puts it much better eloquently than I could. I have really tried hard to like this album, but it just doesn`t do it for me. some of the lyrics are dumb, for sure and I`m not impressed by Neal Morse`s singing voice. Peter gabriel, or Phil Collins(the musician before he turned pap star)he is not.
people cite this as alandmark concept album, but it doesn`t even compare to the `lamb', And why are people citing this band as the furure of progressive rock.If being the futre of progressive rock is merely being a smudgy carbon copy of Genesis, I think i`ll stick withte Genesis tribute bands or genesis` own masterful albums,up to `Duke' that is.
The music is just uninspiring. Theere were many distinguishing moods of music happening throughout the Lamb. I can`t think of one piece of music on this album that sticks out as being memorable.
great playing is all well and good, but how about some coviction and emotion behind it.
I`m reminded of an old baseball story; 1976. Cincinatti Reds vs. NEw York Yankees. The Yanks got their asses handed to them in that series, but Thurman Munson, the late superstar catcher was named MVP. Sparky Anderson manager of the Reds was aked by a TV interviewer of what he thought of Munson. He replied Munson is an excellent ballplayer, but never embarrass him by comparing him to Johnny Bench (the legendary Reds catcher that is now in the baseball fame hall of fame.)
Never embarrass Spock`s beard by comparing them to Genesis,or `Snow' to the Lamb'

Lyrically, Snow is hit or miss. I agree the lyrics to Welcome To NYC are terrible and those lines Eric cited from Devil's Got My Throat are lame, but the rest of the album is good. The lyrics to Wind At My Back are awesome. Muscially, Snow is most excellent. And from a production standpoint and looking at overall quality, Snow is the best sounding Spock's Beard album. However, I still put it a notch behind The Kindness Of Strangers as their best album.

Yeah dude musically, it's actually kind of cool in a couple spots. Problem is Morse's voice sounds horrible on this recording. It sounds really tinny and ear piercing.

Overally there's just too many stupid things on this album for me to like it. And there's way too many things to even list, and usually I don't mind doing that but I'd be here all day typing shit if I did list everything about it that sucked.

Musically the coolest thing on the album is Ryo's solo, which is totally out of context of the album. However, they totally blew it and stuck some lame synth noises for the duration of the middle solo part, and there was totally room for a GOOD solo but Ryo's just making noise At least when Kieth Emerson did that he backed up the noise with some ripping solo lines, this is just noise and it ruined the whole thing. Freak Boy pts 1 and 2 have such awful lyrics that theyre unlistenable. I'm The Guy has some of the most awful Neal vocalisms Ive ever heard (I'm the creepy jerk...I HATE how he delivers that one) I can't figure out what Genesis songs they ripped off for the keyboard noodling in All Is Vanity.

Actually since there's so much bad stuff Ill focus on the few good things about the album. Made Alive Again/Wind At My Back is totally awesome. They may have bungled the whole middle of the album but at least they ended it right. Solitary Soul is the best song ELO never wrote. The first and second overture especially rocks (besides the lame voiceover in the background) Looking For Answers is a nice song, a bit light but still not too bad. I wish the first Wind At My Back was more of a song. But see, I'm starting to get negative again.

This album just sucks! And don't get me wrong, I wanted to like it. I don't miss the long prog epics or anything like that. I went from thinking it was cool, to thinking it would have made a better single CD, to thinking it would make a halfway decent EP, if that. This album is as fun as trying to get a tan in a blizzard.

Yeah dude musically, it's actually kind of cool in a couple spots. Problem is Morse's voice sounds horrible on this recording. It sounds really tinny and ear piercing.

Wow, I am stunned to hear you say that about Morse's vocals. I think they are great on Snow. Sure, some of those lines he sings in I'm The Guy are not that great, but that is the exception rather than the rule. When he sings "thought I was the bigger man..." in All Is Vanity, I am reminded of why I love his voice. No one else could sing that line like that.

I think Ryo's solo is a bit out of place as well. That main melody of it is cool as hell, but that ELP-ripped off synth part in the middle just seems senseless considering the context of the album and everything else around it.

And I totally wouldn't mind that they ripped off ELP if they had done the ELP-ripping some justice! They do that same kind of keyboard noise in Devil's revisited too, it just sounds stupid. But the main melody is the coolest thing on the album.

Is it like an inside joke that Ryo does a lame solo and everybody applauds it because its supposed to be stupid or what? I have their DVD and the first 5 minutes of his solo are him triggering rain and thunder noises and some god awful Thaaaaawunk! sound out of his keyboard. Plus the decending spaceship noises. Sad thing is he looks really into it, and the audience is dead silent like it's the most ingenius keyboard solo ever! And the applause after that is immense! All he's done is made some noises and some wierd faces and they go berserk. Then he gets to the actual music part of the solo, and that's also pretty bad and he's also running through the crowd and headbanging. Is he like the "token gook" to laugh at or something? That's what it seems like to me. I just don't get it. If so they need to leave these inside jokes off of their official releases.

And yeah, sometimes Neal's voice is very good on this album, but a few bad lines can totally ruin a song no matter how good the rest of it is.

Listened more to disc one today. They really needed to give Al some more space on his solo! One of the shining moments of the disc is just unceremoniously cut short, and that awkward fade in to Wind At My Back kind of kills the mood that was set by it. I'm really trying somehow to get my 20 bucks worth out of this disc but so far my efforts are failing me.

Yeah, my biggest beef with Snow is also how abruptly the solo in Solitary Soul ends. It ends out of nowhere and then all of a sudden, Morse is already singing the next song. You would think on a double concept album, some more room there would have been allowed for that solo.

Good points Eric, but that crack about Ryo's nationality was totally out of line. I would edit that before you get reemed beyond belief. As for Ryo and his solos, I think he does an OK job with solos and stuff, but I don't think he is a very creative player in general. I would bet money that Neal Morse wrote the majority of keyboard parts he plays.
