I know death metal and power metal and prog metal, but haven't heard THAT term yet!
heh, no problem, here we go...
Doom metal is basically Metal bands that play slow-paced(and when I mean slow, I really mean SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW) music, with ultra-heavy riffing(usually due to the low tuning of the instruments), occultism or the dark side of the human nature are usually favorite topics in the Doom lyric universe. Most of the bands(the first wave of doom bands) claim Sabbath as their holy grail, Messiah, god. It all began with Sabbath really, when Mr.Iommi created that low slow paced sludgy guitar tone and riffs. The first bands to use that term to describe their music: Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Cathedral, Electric Wizard). Since then the doom scene got bigger and bigger and now has numerous sub-genres, such as: Symphonic Doom, Funeral Doom, Blackened Doom, Drone, Death Doom...the list goes on and on. But most of these bands hail from Europe, In the US things turned a bit different, underground/alternative rock musicians who listened to Sabbath created their own version of the "Sabbath sound", mixing the Iommi riffing style with Psychedelic Rock(Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Electric Prunes), Blues Rock(Grand Funk Railroad, Blue Cheer), proto-punk(Iggy Pop & the Stooges) and a little bit of hardcore. In the US it was called Desert Rock/Stoner Rock, Kyuss was one of the first bands to play Desert/stoner rock.
I´ll post some vids and make a thread about Stoner and Doom bands later.
I found this Stoner/Doom History Tree, it will help you understand who´s who and the sub-genres:http://home.arcor.de/tb-pro/HistoryOfStonerRock.jpg
