The show Friday night was fantastic. In another thread I characterize her music as electric alternative folk. But I have to add to that jazzy and funky and yes, progressive. Ani used to be an angry protester, but now she's a happier protester. She has long dread locks now though at one point in her career she was bald. She is the rhythm guitar and vocals, but her rhythm guitar is done with the spirit of a lead guitar. She brought with her a very tight drummer, very prog, but not overpowering. The keyboardist was also the backup singer, and she was very experimental in her approach the keys. The horn section were two guys that kept changing instruments, mixing flute, sax, clarinet and trumpet. These two guys added incredible depth to Ani's songs, they aren't on the studio songs that I've heard, but were added for the concert, and they are a strong jazz influence. The bass player seemed to me low in the mix, but he was clean and his solo showed alot of talent.
Another bonus to the show was the fans. Lots of truly alternative people and lots of lesbians.
She has concert CD put out after last year's show, which I believe is the same group of people as this year. I'm going to get that tomorrow.
