Greenslade

Postby Coffee_&_Cigarettes » Tue Mar 24, 2009 6:33 pm

I notice that people don´t talk much about Greenslade, reading about prog-rock and rock in general from 1960-1979 i only found very weak material related to this band.
Doing a little research on google and didn´t find anything like a official site, just fan sites that could not provide me much info besides incoherent – between fan sites – discography.
I´m very curious about it since i already have a thing for obscure english rock from the 70´s.
Does anybody here likes or dislikes Dave´s work, i´ll take any thing, Greenslade, Colosseum, Dave Greenslade solo stuff.Where do i begin?

The only thing i found was this biography on Allmusic.com, even though i hate Allmusic Bios and shitty reviews at least is something...

By the time they recorded a third album, , they had added Dave Clempson () on guitar and on fiddle. The next year left the band, being replaced by . After releasing in 1975, they broke up in early 1976. A different lineup of the band made a brief attempt at it in 1977, but it just didn't work, however 23 years later in the year 2000, the group re-formed to begin another journey through their style of progressive rock. They released that year and an album of live recordings from the classic days of the band was also released in 2000.

I always 'dug' the covers (Roger Dean - what's not to like?!) but I can never recall their music, it doesnt stick in my mind.. Another one to check out! PHew, Coffee, your prog retrospective is leaving me exhausted!! so much to catch up on!

Are they still going after their 'restart' in 2000?

Well, it's been a great series, Coffee! Thank you.

there's not a lot out there about Greenslade is there? Wikipedia has a very limited entry & points to 'the' greenslade website:

but the last on there seems to date from 2002.. Dave G seems to have made a living writing TV theme tunes, largely for the BBC.

Greenslade is becoming a mystery!
I´ve managed to get in touch through LastFM.com with John Young:

He recorded with Dave the Greenslade´s album "Large Afternoon" and the live album from 2001.
He´s also played with Scorpions, Fish and John Wetton band.
I´m writing a message to him, lets see how far this story goes...

he has a legendary status among Asiafans, does JY, being the only keyboardist other than Downes to feature in the Band. I confess to not being to familiar with his work, but it would be interesting to see if he has anything to say about Greenslade & where they're at now..

Do not download the file from 4shared!!!!
it´s on .Flac extension, most players like Windows Media, Winamp, Avi, Realplayer and stuff like that don´t read this extension.
I found his first album through Soulseek, you can download it and search Mp3´s.
I found a good link on rapidshare – – contains most of Greenslade´s albums(including solo stuff) it´s all on MP3 extension with 256kbps bitrate.

Sorry for the bad link!

More news about Greenslade and John Young!!!

Postby Coffee_&_Cigarettes » Thu Mar 26, 2009 6:01 pm

I recived a new message from John:

"Gosh ,looks like Greenslade have a new fan:-)
There was some talk last year of doing some shows in Japan but nothing came of it . We played Baya Prog in Mexico a few years back which was fun ...but I guess we are an acquired taste.
Perhaps you can put a good word in with the local festivals for us:-)
I sang on Large Afternoon and played a couple of solos. The original drummer was due to play on it but it didn't happen and as such they used a drum machine which just didn't work for me.... I'm much happier with the live CD.
I don't think there is an official site . As much as we enjoy playing together there is little demand so things haven't really moved on...that said it would be great to tour again with the chaps.
I'll talk to Dave in the next weeks and get an update :)
best regards
jy
P.S. Hope you can help spread the word on both Greenslade and my solo projects ...we need all the help we can get:-)"

well you should tell him (as if he doesnt know) that 'prog' is having a bit of a resurgence at the moment, so their re-union in the early 2000's was a little ahead of the curve! Tell him they have some fans in the UK who'd love to hear them again - I can suggest a few venues (there's a good one in Frome, Somerset, where the re-unified Asia played on their 'comeback' tour). & there's a good few festivals in the UK where they could slot in nicely!

Now I must REALLY listen to their music and become a real fan!! hahaha!

hmm, yes, gobbling this up! already listened to a few tracks (largely from the 2001 live album it seems) I can see what JY means about it needing a 'live' drummer. a machine just wouldnt work!

But I like the 'bass' led style sound to their sound...
