What do YOU do?

Postby Ed1909 » Thu Mar 27, 2003 7:15 am

This is a topic that I started up about a year and a half ago (maybe longer). Thought it might be an idea to bring it back as things are pretty quiet around here and there's a whole load of folks who won't have seen this before.

So, what do YOU do when listening to YES?

Do you sing along with Jon? (or perhaps you don't - why???!)

Perhaps when giving 90125 that annual spin (!) you can't resist air guitaring along to Cinema.

Are you Alan White (plus the rest of the band) during the percussive bit in Ritual?

When listening to Awaken do you find an uncontrollable urge to spin around through 360 degrees when Jon sings "In all encircling mode"?

Do you play air bass during Roundabout?

MUST you dance every time you listen to Lightning Strikes?

Come on all - confess! The more specific the better!

I am quite good at air guitar when it comes to almost anything YesWest...but I've got The Clap....(GOD that sounds terrible, doesn't it) almost spot on! I sing at the top of my lungs when I'm alone listening to anything and when I have the video from 90125 on I am usually dancing around the living room with my real yellow guitar(that I can not play) strapped on me, in front of a big picture window.....Thank GOD we have an awning that covers the window....Our neighbors would think I was MAD!!

nearly all of the above!
when i play yes in the car i definitely sing along, it's a great way to warm up the vocal chords before a gig, it sure makes the long trips shorter!
at home i either take out a guitar and try to figure out what's going on, or sit quiet, meditate and listen. no air guitar or bass, but still singing along at times.
when i listen to awaken i don't do the spin, but i usually find myself floating in midair or simply have tears flowing, it depends on which mood i'm in.
most of the times i'm just stunned.

Oh man...What do I do while I'm listening to , which I've been playing a lot of lately, what with the move and all...

Well, I find myself singing along with SQUIRE'S vocals a lot lately (I don't think I need to explain WHY), but I play a lousy air bass, so I don't do that.

When I do sing along with Jon, I sometimes raise my arms and swing them about like he does, and that 360 turn thing durning Awaken...Oh yeah, I do that, too!

I also find myself dancing about the house like a crazed lunatic, but I need to be ALONE for that!

Most of the time, I just listen. Althugh there IS something to be said for some good air guitaring during "Shoot High Aim Low" or "Lift Me Up"! But why air guitar when I can play the real thing with just a bit of trouble and effort?

I have to say, I cannot figure how I'd 'air guitar' to ANY of Steve's stuff, because it simply doesn't suggest that to me... maybe that's why I'm not as big a fan of his as a lot of people here!

Although I'm a guitarist, I tend to play along with the drum parts whilst driving around; I've managed to smash some new dimples in the steering wheel playing along. It's also interesting when I forget that I'm driving, and kick the bass drum pedal a little too firmly - for those not aware, the bass drum pedal is equivilant to the accelerator on the vehicle. Special fun is Long Distance Runaround, with the snare every 5 beats instead of 4; fortunately, I've no idea how to fit a bass drum kick in there - yet!!

In my single days I would do my apartment cleaning to Tales From Topographic Oceans. I would listen to all 4 sides (the 2 record vinyl LP of course...)in order and take a short break every time I needed to turn the record over. Nowdays I listen to CDs on my laptop at work and crank up Yes out in the garage of our house and rock out the driveway. That's great for yardwork, carwork or just keeping watch over the neighbor kids. Yes music: 1001 uses.

Oh, God, my secrets are out now!!

Before I get sectioned, I confess to:-

- Absolutely slamming out the end of Awaken on the car stereo, waving my arms about and singing along at the top of my voice. Empty roads are recommended for this...
- Wearing out the arms on my Dad's swivel leather chair drumming along to Gates
- Loadsa air guitar - Starship Trooper is probably my favourite
- Playing two keyboards at once in the Yessongs version of Perpetual Change
- - Yes, I can outdo Jon on vocals (no I can't, but I damn well try!)
- Pogoing to Roundabout

To all these I confess. Can I go back in the padded room now?

Cheers,

Simon

If I'm alone I feel compelled to sing along (although in a much deeper register than Jon/Chris). Have no fear if you are next to me at a concert. I am content then to let the band sing.

Playing Air Bass on Siberian Khatru, and, like sjeffs, blasting the end of Awaken as loud as I can.

It all depends, if I'm alone I might sing the Jon parts, or I may just listen. I might dance if it's a dancey song, alot of ballet (when I'm alone of course!) In the car I kind of just sail...I might take off one of these days and fly into the clouds. When people are around I'm usually just annoyed because they actually talk above the music, so I do usually listen when alone. Alot of the time I am stunned just like Guild. Especially if it's a video, than I can't move.

Well I don't sing along that's for sure, basically because I'm soooo bad that I sound out of tune with the crowd chanting at soccer matches! The only time I do is in the car, on the motorway, and every time I do it I offer an apology to Jon for the horrible things I do to those wonderful songs.

I often work listening to music and it's amazing how that helps sometimes. After a really bad time with something I often find some Yes, Rush, Pallas or whatever will help me regain perspective and equilibrium. I am sure that there are several people walking this earth today that have no idea that they owe their lives to the band!

I have been known to air guitar or even to give the old tennis racket an airing but it's depressing because even then I can't keep time. Eventually it was getting to me too much and I had to let the racket go to a friend who strangely enough wanted to play tennis with it. I didn't know you could use them for that as well.

And I went through a phase of using Yes music to help me sleep. A piece of advice, don't use Close to the Edge for this. If you fall asleep to "In her white lace . . ." you're likely to make a dent in the ceiling when Rick opens up with the organ solo! Gates is actually a good album for this with To Be Over a wonderful dream-inducing track!

Simon.

......and I had a big window, about 20' by 6', and a better view, I could see a major portion of the western sky toward the Pacific with no city lights, so I looked at the constellations.........another time I was living in an apartment hotel in Andorra, in the Pyrennees between France and Spain; I had a view of this mountain ridge above homes and shopping centers, and then the snow started coming down one evening; but at that time I was listening to Mike Oldfield Not of This Earth.........

First of all, if I'm truly wanting an "uninterrupted" YES listening experience, I "DO IT" after everyone has gone to sleep or is out of the house for movie, etc.
I start with the headphones on (I have cordless ones so I'm completely "mobile"), I burn some Nag Champa and even use a cheesy mirrow ball/disco lite my ten yr old has(Eric:is THAT nerdy enough for you?) to get the full "EFFECT" unless of course the weather is good and then I just go sit outside on our deck gazing up at the cosmos, moon, shooting stars, etc... feeling that HIGH VIBRATION!!
A trip to the YESBAR before, during and afterwards doesn't hurt either!
"Tall Jon" doesn't sing either.....I might get shot around my neck(red) of the woods in that we have coyotes roaming in the woods below our house!!My singing may just too close to that.it's now TURKEY hunting season too......

Well, I used to work to Yes music - but that stopped because I couldn't keep it turned down low enough. Apparently my speakers have a short in them, and when I turn them down to a tolerable (for everyone else) level, they cut out. And I hate using headphones at my desk because I then can't roll over to the other side to get things w/o taking off the headphones. So, I'm Yes-less here at the moment.

I do sing (badly) to Yes music - you should hear me try to hit the high notes! Then again, maybe not!

I take Yes along on walks, and just lip-synch so I don't disturb the other walkers!

Basically, I do most everything with a Yes soundtrack!
