Just another lost soul...

Postby Haze » Tue May 27, 2003 6:10 am

Hi everyone!

I've just arrived to this site and I thought I'd start this journey, or what you might call it, with you by introducing myself:

I have ..hrmm.. fairly recently past forty and live in a town called Umeå - which is situated in north Sweden - with my beautiful and talented girlfriend and a strange Cornish Rex cat. I play guitar, collect records (preferably vinyl) and share a small record store (which you can visit on http://go.to/garagelandrecords) with three friends. Any similarity between me and the character Rob in that Nick Hornby novel is purely incidental - but at the same time scaringly close!

Anyways. I found you 'cause of my friend and guitar playing mate Thomas (whom you might know as "Guilddigger"). We discovered our mutual interest in Yes music a couple of years ago. And this, this site, is the natural continuancey (is that a word?)I guess. If you want to be kept up to date and "in the loop" so to speak, about Yes that is.

I bought my first Yes album (The Yes Album) back in -71. And it was like... The Revealing Science of... I don't know?! I had never before heard music like that. My previous idols had been Beatles, Stones, Deep Purple amongst others, but this! It was so complex yet harmonic and exciting. I still have that original copy of The Yes Album but it's quite worn down now.

Enough about me. How about you?

See ya

Welcome to YEStalk, Haze! We are happy to have you join us here in our not-so-remote corner of cyberspace. YES is of course, our reason to be here and what a reason it is! Though your knowledge as well as interest in this phenomenal band may be quite vast, there is always something more to learn, so I recommend you explore our many forums to see just what strikes your fancy. There is a wealth of information stored within these hallowed forums so please feel free to browse. Should you require any assistance, don't hesitate to ask.

In so much as being 'lost', I'm not so sure I can go along with that. You see, you are a friend of Tom's and that right there speaks volumes. He surely isn't, so, therefore neither are you and for that matter, neither are we...musically, anyway. We have Jon, Chris, Steve, Alan and Rick to thank for that.

Again I welcome you.

Thank you for a very friendly Welcome! Being indeed a newcomer to this kind of communication I truly appreciate your words.

Yes, Tom is a very good friend of mine and, apart from that, a very competent musician that I have the pleasure of working with. It started of with this idea of creating a cover group dedicated to YES music. But soon realizing that it probably would be like dabbling with The Grand Scheme of Things - although we both know a few licks but not being sure if anybody else would - we decided to back off a bit an settle for the music of Pink Floyd instead.

About the title of this topic: I'm not intending that we're lost souls musically or personally. It's more like I tried to put a name to the fact that all of us who enjoy good and creative music are commercially lost in the eyes of the Big record companies. Well, as a band YES managed to establish themselves before things got out of hand, but bands with the same intent today may encounter some problems... We're definitly not lost in the real sense of the word, but perhaps a bit off the commercially beaten track.

I'm rambling, aren't I? Oh well, never mind!

Thanks for having me on this ship.

Hello HAZE! "Purple HAZE, Gabby Haze, Helen Haze... " from Frank Zappa's "Best Band Your Never Heard Of"

Great "Handle" who plays an ax and knows TOM, we need some "inside" info on Tom besides what he likes to cook....Be sure to wear your seatbelt if you ride with him too...
Hey, didn't that Purple HAZE fellow (JIMI) spend some time with a fellow Swede?? Monika??
I'm a long time YES fan, since 1969 and a "fanatic" since 1972.....prior and to and still until today I enjoy early Animals, early Stones, all of JIMI, The Doors, Cream, Deep Purple, King Crimson and Johnny Winter. My 70's were mainly YES and Led Zep dominated. In the 80's, YesWest came and went, it was "interesting" and in the 90's and until the present I have "enjoyed" the Keys period thru Classic 2002 which hopefully will continue on and on......My two "claims to fame" are I was at a filming of YESSONGS and I know Adrian Belew of King Crimson who happens to live and record in my little hometown outside of Nashville.

Welcome Haze. Hope you end up becoming as home here as Guilddigger.
What is it about you Swedes and Prog music? How can a country with half the population of Australia produce the likes of Par Lindh, Flower Kings, Anglagard, Landberk, Anekdoten and Bo Hansson? Not to mention such excellent footballers as Anders Limpar and Freddie Ljundberg. Gunners legends both.

I'm overwhelmed by the welcome you're giving me! Thank you, again! I am certainly and quickly finding a home away from home here.

About my "handle": It's actually my nickname. You see, my real name is Hans and this quite commonly transforms into the nickname Haze over here. But it's pronounced a bit different; like the dog Lassie actually (but with the L changed into an H, of course, and a somewhat shorter 'e'-sound at the end). However, I would prefer your interpretation and/or pronunciation of the name. That's undoubtably much cooler!

About Tom: For some reason many of you are interested in knowing more about Tom. Beside the fact that Tom assured me that this site didn't have the slander and back stabbing that you might find in other bands forums - I DO have a few things that I could share with you about Tom! Hmm, maybe I should keep them to myself until he decides to pester me with more deck hand jobs (see his first post in this topic).

I'm very impressed that you've noticed some of Swedens contributions to progressive rock. I myself really enjoy Anekdoten (a lot of King Crimson there), Opeth (I noticed your discussion about them in an earlier topic) and Bo Hansson to name a few, but most of all The Flower Kings and especially their guitarist/songwriter/singer Roine Stolt. Please check out his side project Transatlantic, if you haven't already done that!

As a reply to "Astral traveller": I'm not sure if we're "the underground-sceners" as much as the "Overseeing-sceners". We do know and understand complex music, mainly thanks to Yes, and this should elevate us far above the underground, don't you think? However, we nevertheless spit on mainstream!

Hey, Perpetualchanger, share some will you?

Cheers
Haze

Have you come across Morte Macabre, Haze? This project is an amalgum of members from Landberk and Anekdoten. It's an entirely instrumental album, that as I understand it, is the brainchind of Reine Fisk. It's a really cool album that pays homage to soundtracks from 60s and 70s horror movies such as Rosemary's Baby and City of the Living Dead. Very dark feel to it and soaked in mellotron. Heavily influenced by the Italian band Goblin. It's worth checking out.

I have heard of Morte Macabre, but unfortunatly not heard the record. This flaw should be corrected as soon as poss'. However, Goblin I've missed entirely! I still got a lot to learn...
Can't help notice that you're from Australia, bundy. I fairly recently discovered a seventies band called Spectrum. I got hold of one CD - a kind of compilation CD - called Spectrum-murtceps. I heard it first time at a friends house and reacted when I heard two songs that I, in my naivite, thought were made by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Of course it's the other way around. Really liked their early type of progressive style though. There is probably a whole bunch of interesting bands (old, as well as new) from Australia that I missed? Feel free to give me a few hints.

_____

So you feel that there's a few stains left on the deck, eh Tom? One more remark like that and I will be forced to tell the story about you, that poor donkey and the Yes vinyl single with the centerpiece taken out. I know the authorities didn't press charges, but I believe they made a cover-up to save the reputation of a certain local female polititian.

Hi Haze, I don't have anything by Spectrum. Home grown prog bands have almost no profile in Australia. Perhaps the most successful and well known would be Sebastian Hardie. They released a couple of brilliant albums in the mid 70s. They are still around and will in fact be supporting Yes on their tour here later in the year. Try and check these guys out. They are something very special.

Isn't that the truth. Home grown bands never get their rightful recognition in their own countries! I think there's a saying that fits, but I can't remember how it goes. Something about: You'll never be a prophet in your own town.. or whatever? I found several Swedish bands through connections abroad, rather than through Swedísh radio, papers or TV. This especially occurs when looking for progressive music, of course.
My favorite magazine, by the way, is the English monthly Record Collector. Whether I want to look up old stuff or new, progressive in general or YES, they have it all!

I will check out Sebastian Hardie! My latest tip for you bundy, is a new German band called: RPWL, and their latest album STOCK. This tip goes to Sound_chaser too because they sound a bit like Pink Floyd - but just a bit! And the good bit, anyway.

I too like Mr Rabin. My interest in his work actually started before he joined YES. His third solo album "Wolf" from 1981 sounds almost up to date even today.

Yes Mam, I will join the chat shortly. Well, maybe not tonight but soon enough... And if I can find that elusive Tom I'll bring him too.

NEWS! This just in: Swedish Radio will broadcast the entire YES show at the Sweden Rock Festival June 8th. And in stereo! Goody!!
