I saw the somewhat mediocre flick "Buffalo '66" on video just the other night. Never mind the movie but at the end there's a "dream sequence" which had a soundtrack that got my attention: The first part of "Heart of the sunrise" were aptly played to a rather bloody Shoot Out. Well, it got me thinking...

What I want to know is: Do you know any other movie where YES music has been used? Have you seen any film where you've identified a YES album cover or maybe even a poster in the background? Or one of the actors talking about the band YES or perhaps mentioning a song title?

Hello Haze Welcome to YesTalk!
Any friend of Tom's is a friend of mine!
To answer your question......Sort of....Yes in a way.
Trevor Rabin was actually in a movie. Playing a guitarist. (What a thespian stretch) it is called "Jack Frost" It is a Michael Keaton flick, for the Christmas season. not to bad but he is just in it for less than 3 minutes in the very very beginning.
Again Welcome and hopew to see you in chat.

Hmm, this is actually quite interesting. I've never seen that movie but the title is the same as an English TV show that another favourite band of mine (Jethro Tull) made the leading score to. Is there any connection between the film and the TV show I wonder?

Trevor Rabin playing a guitarist?!! Well, at least he's in the right spot.

Thank you for you welcome, Leslie. As soon as I learn how to get into the Chat, I'll be there too...

Not Yes music per se, but I once saw a movie called Biggles: Adventures in Time (I think that was the name) that featured Jon Anderson singing something called "Do You Want to Be a Hero". It was a cool movie, and the music made it even better. Anyone remember seeing that one?

Almost Famous not only has Yes, think it's ISAGP, but the scene backstage with the fictional band is modeled on Cameron Crowe's actual interview of Yes. The actual concert was Yes and Black Sabbath, circa 1973, I believe. It's in the booklet that comes with And a Word, and Rolling Stone recently ran a photo of Cameron Crowe at age 15 backstage with Jon Anderson (who is smoking a cigarette).

Yes; seen that (didn't care for the movie much though!)

Also Jon did a song for the early Tom Cruse movie, Legend.

And there's another Jon song (or is it 2?) on Metropolis

I'm sure there's more...

This has actually been covered quite extensively in another thread maybe 8 months ago...but...since you asked - Jons solo bit - State of Independance - was re-done by Chrissy Hynde (Pretenders) and appears during the closing credits of the film "Single White Female". All Good People is somehwere in the Adam sandler movie - "Big Daddy" - at least it was in the trailer.

ISAGP was in a movie called "Dick" which was a comedy about two teenage girls sinking Richard Nixon's career. That ISAGP was in the soundtrack is all I remember about it.

I think ISAGP was in a Spiderman movie too.

Jon Anderson did a solo song called Loved By The Sun which was in a movie that I didn't see called Legend.

But don't worry. If I ever get my book finished and they make it into a movie, there will be PLENTY of Yes music in the movie. There's Yes music in the book but you can't hear it.

I figured that this topic should have been covered a few times before, but I'm still curious, since my other favorite band Jethro Tull appears in odd situations from time to time. For example, when the actor Owen what's-his-name, in that Bruce Willis movie Armageddon, talks to the psychiatrist and says: "...it's like when people think that Jethro Tull is a person and not a band..." I mean, there must be a lot of these, kind of, hidden references regarding YES as well?

Thanks for the tip on Almost famous. I have to see it again then. I didn't know that Crowe had based the backstage scene on an actual event with YES. Is that original interview available from somewhere?

Actually, Haze, I don't think so, at least not in the same way you're thinking. While I have heard people mention things like what was said in Armageddon, never have I ever heard anything similar being mentioned regarding YES. But, I will say that I have heard more YES than Tull in movies by a long shot ( no slam on Ian Anderson by any means ).

in the booklet that comes with In a Word, Cameron Crowe writes about that scene and that interview, but doesn't say what magazine it was for. He says he later toured Southern Calif for with them for a Rolling Stone pieces. i don't know if perhaps Rolling Stone has the article archived?

Hello everybody. Sorry I have not been online much in last few weeks, it is good to read some posts and see what is going on.

Last years Adam Sandler flick Mr. Deeds plays a clip from Your Move in it, (right after Bowie's Space Oddity)

Also, I recently saw an old movie from the 70's called Rollercoaster with George Segal and a very young Helen Hunt in it, in one of the first scenes, a maintenance worker at the amusement park is wearing a t-shirt with a big old Yes logo on it! Check for it on Turner classic or American Movie classics.

Goodness knows there is enough Yes music out there to fit almost any mood in a movie! Hope we see a few more.

hey welcome Haze.
judging film can be so personal/individual etc.
I certainly understand that two people can view the same film, and form different opinions.
Such is the case here.
I found Buffalo '66 riveting. Even without the most excellent use of Heart of the Sunrise, and Sweetness, I would have to give this film a rating of classic.
The odd characters, and the great acting had me hooked from beginning to end.
The redeeming payoff in the last couple minutes beats the pants off any Hollywood cookie-cutter formula film hands down.

Right you are - like that classic Saturday Night Live bit with the three guys drunk and guzzling beer at a bar extolling the virtures of their friend Bill Bronski, who, one will note if you look,"...all his family photos are actually Yes Album covers"

This is exactly what I was looking for! Small tit-bits that makes you go: "WOW, did you see (or hear) that?!". Things you might've missed simply by looking at another part of the screen. I'm not a fanatic (Well perhaps a little then - but you know what I mean), it's just fun to share these little things with friends like yourselves.

Vulcan 1, I think they showed that Rollercoaster movie you mentioned on Swedish TV not so long ago. Pity I didn't know this then!

Speaking of fanatics: My girlfriend is a huge fan of Alfa Romeo cars. She brought home this big and expensive Italian cook book the other week just because you could spot - very small in one corner of the cover - an old Alfa Romeo! As it turned out the book presented, amongst other recipes, a wicked Canneloni. So it was OK in the end.

I'm sorry if I offended one of your favorite movies OB1kenOB. Although I'm not sharing your view completly, the film weren't that bad. It's just that I get overly critical when writers also want to act in, and direct, their movies. Especially in these Quentin Tarrantino-like "Film Noir"-productions. I'm probably stepping on somebody else's toes now, aren't I? Anyway, I will give Buffalo '66 another viewing.

But I'm digressing. Thank you all for many funny and interesting examples. Please keep 'em comin'!

I am more than prepared to eat crow here. Ha! Apparently, Haze, there is more in film than I had imagined. Still, the level of obscurity is very high, but I'm glad to see that the mention of YES in any fashion, shape or form is not quite as rare as the dodo bird which was my first thought.
