I always KNEW there must be something going on up there! Living not so far away from norway, and they're making ONE HELL OF A NOISE celebrating and singing songs (gee, these norwegian lyrics - at least ABBA did their thing in english!), and then the cheering at the traditional midnight-reindeer-sleigh-race through the forests, where Bjoern Schumacherson with his reddyred ferra-reindeer year after year wins the horn-helmet trophy ...

(... someone's got to help me out of this ... I don't have the SLIGHTEST idea what I', talking about ... what in the world is this festivity that my viking neighbours celebrate today?)

(And don't tell me somthing like "Just drop by, Ra, and take a look - you're living right next door!"
Europe isn't as big as the U.S., but it sure is bigger as the front yard of my grandmother's house!)

Signing off slighly confused,
Ra

wanna hear a funny story about Norway's national day? well, i'm gonna tell it anyway.

i was there in 1985. i was living in Sweden with my then wife and we drove to Oslo to visit friends over the May 17 weekend.

we saw the festivities and a parade outside the king's residence during the day. we then went to a Norwegian friend's house to drink massive quantities of alcohol before going to a party later that night. the Norwegians told us drinking at someone's home before you go to a party is called "forespiel" meaning "before you play".

so sometime later back in Sweden my wife invited some of the Swedish guys we knew to come to our house one Friday night for a "forespiel" before we went out on the town. the guys were stunned and fell down laughing because in Swedish (which is not much more than a dialect of Norwegian) the term "forespiel" means foreplay.

one more. i'm not really a joke teller and this certainly has nothing to do with but it was pretty funny at the time, perhaps more poignant now (ooo, big word!).

since we were going to be there for over a year we had status as "residents" of Sweden. so while i worked each day, my wife studied Swedish at the local university (in Goeteborg) with other immigrants. the class was kind of a United Nations with people from all over the world.

anyway, one day the teacher had them act out Little Red Riding Hood in the classroom. my wife had the leading role, someone else was Grandma, someone else the big bad wolf and an Iranian was the benevolent hunter.

as you might imagine, some of the participants (including the Iranian) had never heard the story before.

so in everyone's clumsy Swedish they read from scripts and acted out the story. near the end of the story when the big bad wolf was about to devour poor Grandma and Red Riding Hood, the Iranian was told that his character was supposed to shoot the wolf with his rifle. this suited him just fine. he proceeded to pucker his lips for the appropriate sound effects and using his best body language sprayed the room with machine gun fire.

i used to teach immigrant and refugee children swedish. many of them came from iran, iraq, somalia and the war zone around bosnia. they were all pretty marked by their horrible experiences and it took them some time to feel safe again.
but that story was pretty funny innerpact!
