Dreamtime in Austin:YES and...Elvis

Postby poodeeo » Sun Aug 18, 2002 10:02 pm

Soooo cool! Jon sings happy birthday to Janee(sitting two rows in front of me), and then does an Elvis impression, THEN, breaks into "Jail House Rock". The band joins in for a dozen bars or so, all smiles and laughing(yeah, especially Steve, who CAN really play 12 bar blues rock!!!). Steve hollered to Jon and Chris something to the effect that he hadn't played that in 30 years.

I had 3rd row, just to the left, DIRECTLY in front of Steve...a dream come true. I made eye contact with Jon, Steve and Chris several times...I think my old Topographic Oceans T shirt was a giveaway. The Austintaseous crowd was laid back. The band was loose and enjoying themselves. Jon made some lyric error on HOTS, looked down at Janee, laughed and jokingly popped himself on the forehead. No sweat Jon!! Near the end of YIND, Janee was on stage, way left, and Jon ran over, picked her straight up and they swirled around hugging and...

Due to my location, Rick was the person I saw or heard the least...I'm sure 10 rows back the mix was a bit more balanced. Steve never sounded better. He used various ES 175's, the 135, Strat, 00-18, slide, mandolin, Steinberger, Khono, and that's all I remember seeing.

Awaken was surreal, but SSOTS hit the lottery for me. Towards the end, at the fadeout section, Steve and Rick(on moog) traded 8's for a minute or so. FANTASTIC!! They did it again on YIND. And Jon's solo piece was very, very nice. His custom Backpacker(i assume) did not sound shallow like a backpacker(processing?)Look foreward to his next LP.

Thank you YES, for the magic.

we have heaven

Wonderfully short yet sweet review there, Poodeeo! Looks like you guys got a bonus!

Yeah, Poodeeo, where have you been? Real discret- appearances nowadays. I guess I've never heard anything about Jon doing an Elvis impression. THAT was wild.

I guess Rick+Steve are on fire, huh?

Yeah that was me, and yeah that was her. i sold her a spare ticket before the show. She was definately colorful. But I think she got in deep shit with her boyfriend. He came back late in the show and took her seat, unkown to her, and quietly watched her party with the guys in front of me. Seemed innocent enough to me, but I don't think he felt that way.
Were you the guy that asked me about the Stonehenge replica in Kerrville?

I went to this show with my son...20th row right-center. The mix of Rick was lousy in some places, but a very good show nontheless. (I wrote a review over at YesNet)

I had waited since the "In The Round" Tormato tour to see Rick again. What a STUNNING player he is! My son loves YIND! :D

BTW....I was the lucky winner of Z-102's "In A Word-Yes" box set!

The high point? I finally hear YIND LIVE with Rick Wakeman!

Low point? Don't Kill The Whale (I explain in my review) ;)
