My impossible tour set list

Postby Ed Schaum » Fri May 03, 2002 10:27 am

I don't want to sound jaded, but after seeing Yes maybe 30 or 40 times over the years, some of the tunes are overplayed. And even when they change things around, there's still a bunch of tunes they almost always play.

So here's what I'd like to sit down to this summer, in show order -

Tempus Fugit
Sound Chaser
Changes
Magnification
Shock to the System
Future Times/Rejoice
Turn of the Century
Mind Drive
Madrigal
New Language
Give Love Each Day
Can You Imagine
To Be Over

Encore:
Footprints
South Side

never happen :)

Hey, if you're going to list your dream set, then you forgot their cover of "The Grand Machine"!

But then I guess they wouldn't play any songs that the opening band just played!

Maybe that's the good thing about being in the UK, we get to see more shows than many but not enough to get too jaded about which songs they play. That said. I'd like to see a setlist like the one above, I just have a sneaking suspicion that I'd walk out thinking "<i>that was great but I sure missed Starship Trooper and Roundabout</i>". I'm hopeful that they will continue to play some of the Mag stuff and maybe a few new classics on the next tour. South Side of the Sky! Come on boys you can do it!

The interesting thing about the set above is that it's an incredibly balanced "Trooper" set list without including any of the standards . . .

Ed, I agree your setlist will never happen. But, just for fun, let us ponder: what if it did happen?

How would fans recieve the setlist? Would this setlist have a chance of capturing the interest of newer fans? What about the old-timers? Many of your songs are newer. Would this have a negative impact? I'm thinking that it might because fans are not in agreement with new Yes. Afterall, it seems reasonable that the "classic" setlist is successful because it contains the gems that most of us like.

Now, having said that, I do like your setlist.

I would change just two things - On the Silent Wings of Freedom instead of Future times/Rejoice, and Release, Release instead of Madrigal.

I've been playing Tormato a lot lately. Could be wishful thinking on my part that they'll polish up some of the gems from this album (there are a couple) and put them on display this summer. And I've been praying for several months now that they'll attempt South Side. I might be crazy but I'm optimistic. <img src=pix/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Do you think Yes has many newer fans anyway? I don't mean to ask that in a derogatory way. I am of the mind that Yes doesn't attract a new crowd to a concert more than say 5%? What do you think? This is a topic I would really like some feedback on.

Ed, your concert is too short. I'd add a longer piece in there too like CTTE. <img src=pix/icon_yes_yes.gif border=0 align=middle>

I'm sure even Yes would like to play that set list, Ed. The problem is, at least over here in Europe, most people come to see the 70s classics. Most people love Yes for what they did then. If I were going to see Deep Purple, which I liked in the 70s, I would want to hear Smoke On The Water and the classic songs. I don't even know if they have made any records in the last 20 years. That's how most of the people on a Yes show feels as well. It must be frustrating for the Yes members. The best they can do, probably, is to skip the old numbers that have been played during the last 2 tours, and play some of the other classic stuff + the best tracks from Ladder and Magnification.

Just from listening to boots the last several weeks, I'm tired of Roundabout and AGP.

<font color=red><font face='Papyrus'>Talk about having one's head up their ass! My above stated set list ( not gonna happen but it would be great if it did )contains a wonderful little error. Kindly disregard the "ed" at the end of "Awaken". I can only attribute my error to the fact that I had not yet 'awakened'. Thank you and good day!</font id='Papyrus'></font id=red><img src=pix/icon_yes_yes2.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well, they've now added several of these tunes, so maybe if I bump this again they'll add the rest next year :)

My wishes for a setlist for the next tour.
Yes have just been here and I can't wait for their next tour. Those of you who still haven't seen the Euro 2004 tour, you haver nothing to worry about. The current set list is great, but this is my wishes for the next time they show up at my shores:

First Part:
<b>Rondabout</b> -Great opener! And be done with it! The version they do on the current tour is great, but I'd like to hear the original the next time (and not the short version!!!)
<b>Close to the Edge</b> - They did it last here at the 2001 Symphonic tour, but I'd like to hear it with Rick.
<b>Astral Traveller</b> - Saw a video clip from around 70/71 of this with leslie all over the place. That was sooo great.
<b>Heart of the Sunrise</b> - One of the great numbers, haven't been performed live here for ages!
<b>Dreamtime</b> - A great piece. I imagine this being even better with Rick in stead of the orchestra.
<b>Revealing Science of God</b> - Since they did Rirual on their last two stops here.

Second part:
Accoustic set.
I love this part. But next time my wish is:
</b>Wakeman spot</b> - Give the man some slack to do some talking and some playing alone. He allways has a great story to deliver, lots about Yes too.
<b>Quarter</b> - Great tune that would fit in an accoustic set!
<b>Another marvellous remake of a classic</b> - It worked so well IOM with Roundabout and Owner, waitnig for a new surprise here.
<b>Leaves of Green</b> - ..or The Ancient from 'ah kin' and out. (Not sure where 'Leaves' really starts)
<b>Steve Howe</b> - He still has to do a solo number, and it always changes which is nice. What about Masquerade (or Mood for a Day which never have been on the setlist here)

<b>Endless dream</b> - Haven't done it in Norway, ever!
<b>Hold out your Hand</b> - Why is it that Steve and Rick (and Jon) always get to do pieces from their solo production and not Chris. This (or any other track from FOOW) would be great in a Yes setting. Should be sufficent with Chris, Alan and Rick playing (that's basically the instrumentation on FOOW), eventually with Steve and Jon as doo-wop-girls!
<b>Pepetual Change</b> - Great tune that hasn't been played here for a while
<b>Awaken</b> - Haven't done it in Norway since 1977! Simply the best!
<b>South side of the sky[/b] - In electric version. May it never be removed from any setlist, ever!
<b>New Masterpiece[/b] - Hopefully

These were the votes from the Norwegian Jury. Good Night.

Maybe Yes should go for a Yes West set-list in America, and bring along Rabin and Sherwood or whoever, and play lots of 80s - 90s material, and a Yes East set list (with much of the setlist from 1970-77, in Europe), since they've been hiding somewhere in America for most of the 80s and 90s. European crowds are simply not familiar with these tracks.
A newspaper critic claimed there was far too much new unknown material in the recent concert (it was no more than say 25%). I don't agree, (see my wish-upon-a-star-setlist above), but I suspect most of the audience did.
