has anybody else noticed how yes (at least in the old days) sometimes borrow from, or hint at previous albums in their music? for instance on ritual steve plays the close to the edge theme. also in his solo in to be over, he plays the 'out in the city running free' melody from tales. it´s all slightly altered and very brief but definitely a glance back over the shoulder to the past. anyone found other hidden hints?

and meech, this does not belong in the trivia forum, it´s not a game but a serious research.

"Quartet" has referneces to earlier albums and tracks.

long distance runaround...how did we dance on the south side of the sky...and thru the gates of delirium so fast...I was awakened by the dream...and all that I remembered was the roundabout only to believe in you."

I've always wondered how often these nods back to previous albums are deliberate and how many were only spotted later. It must be hard to keep being original across thirty plus years of writing and recording!

My favourite "look over the shoulder" is the Roundabout bassline appearing in New Language.

Simon.

Isn't there a tiny bit of Ritual in To be Over?
I always thought there was.

somewhere near 'holding doors will open everyway'
Maybe I'm wrong.

Rick plays part of Heart of the Sunrise in Revealing Science. Right around the 'Tallest Rainbow' part.

You and I are on the same page, guild. In fact there's a lot of it on Magnification with words from other songs but I'm too tired to mess with looking them up right now.

At the end of "Miracle of Life", Trevor Rabin plays a guitar melody that would later become the basis for "Where Will You Be?.

Also, to my ears parts of the song "Magnification" echoe the opening of Revealing Science of God - the guitar/keys/drums theme after the opening chant. Not as easily discernable as the first example above.

At the end of Endless Dream, they repeat the main melody from Where Will You Be?

Consistancy, I like that in a band.

By the way, Ive also heard some of the riffs played in Yes music in some of Steve Howes solo stuff.

The melody for "our lives" in 'We Agree' is the same as "at alllll" in 'Ritual'. I'm SURE this was mentioned in another thread though!
Talk has several recurring themes too: the aforementioned melody from "Where Will You Be" in Endless Dream, and the line "I want to be inside your heart" from 'I Am Waiting' pops up in 'State of Play'!
And has anybody else noticed the EXTREME similarity between "Changes" and "I'm Running"? They both have uptempo parts mixed with slower and darker D-minor picked guitar riffs, and both songs prominently feature the marimba... coincidence? I only just noticed this about a week ago while listening to "I'm Running"! I would have to say I like "Changes" SLIGHTLY better (it flows from section to section perfectly, whereas "I'm Running" comes across as a bit disjointed), but only barely!
