Re: Ahem, Yes song of the week???

In a strange way I see this similar to "Horizon" setting up "Suppers Ready". Absolutely. Also, songs like King Crimson's Prelude/Islands and Jon Anderson's Days/Song of Seven. Another pairing that works very well in this context (and don't laugh) is Rod Stewart's Henry's Time/Maggie May. I know Mag...

Re: Ahem, Yes song of the week???

Who is up?? Ah, yes, sorry, I was away visiting my Grandchildren at the weekend and I forgot about this thread. Still, Wondrous Stories is an excellent choice. I always linked it to Tolkien and Lord of the Rings and have great memories of reading that wondrous book back in the seventies. Fantastic ...

Re: A Question of Balance

I'm a big fan, although they could be a bit formulaic in the structure of their albums. Far and away the best, in my opinion, are On The Threshold Of A Dream & To Our Childrens Childrens Children. In Search Of The Lost Chord & Every Good Boy Deserves Favour are excellent as well. A Question Of Balan...

A great band indeed. My favourite Camel albums are Mirage & Moonmadness. The Snow Goose is very good also, but not quite as good as those two albums which bookend it. Rain Dances is another fine album, as is Breathless, both of which feature Richard Sinclair, ex of Caravan. I could recommend those C...

Re: Crisis? What Crisis?

Hello Haze! I have always found it har d to get into Supertramp. While I can enjoy some of their music, for some reason I can't stand Hodgson's voice. Well, the reason is I find it too whiny. I can't really get into Rush because of Geddy lee, so I know what you mean. And would you believe there are...

In The Land Of Grey & Pink is a magnificent album: a true classic. I also have If I Could Do It Again, I'd Do It All Over You, which is also brilliant and has their signature song, For Richard. I love the vocals of Richard Sinclair and he's also had a very interesting career away from Caravan. Leadi...

Re: Yessong of the week: Magnification

That is my favorite part of the lyric as well, I just love that phrasing. It is uncanny how this album was released on 9-11. The problem and the solution presented themselves on the very same day -- and nobody noticed. It was uncanny, because I think there were quite a few analogies to be drawn fro...

Can't understand that attitude...the album can be bought for €10,it can be downloaded legally and illegally, and it's all on youtube anyway, so how hard can it be to sample? I know there's a lot of music out there, but Union is really a pretty good album and well worth pushing up the to listen list...

Re: Yes Song of the Week: Sound Chaser

To me, the tribal chants are symbolic of something special we lost along the way in mankind’s crazy pursuit of building a corporate world, where, instead of joining together as a global village, great swathes of people feel more disenfranchised than ever: our primitive urges have been overrun. I thi...

Re: Does The Ladder really suck?

The obvious answer to the question is "no". We are talking about a genuine return to form in my book at least for Yes with this disc. This and Magnification showed me at least that the creative ability in the band was very much alive and kicking. The problem is that these days it's all about image ...

I guess he means in terms of the actual recording process. I'd be very interested to hear Billy expand on this as well, as although I write songs and have been involved with lots of musicians over the years, I‘ve never actually been in a recording studio. Also, we should give Billy his due for his c...

Re: Yes Song of the Week: Sound Chaser

What a fantastic choice! I think they did play it live on the Relayer tour: I'll have to dig out the boot. This is one of the last songs to tick off my list to actually see played live and although it's unlikely now, you never know. Time to give it a spin.

Re: Does The Ladder really suck?

I love the Ladder, it has both truly classic Yes moments, as in Homeworld and New Language, and songs that really should have been radio hits, especially Lightning Strikes. Although panned by many, I think Lightning Strikes has all the energy of early Yes with a dash of world music, all in a radio-...

Re: Does The Ladder really suck?

While I do think that Bruce Fairburn deserves a lot of credit for this album being so great, I need to say that I think Igor Khorchev deserves more. This one would have been a flop without him. He sounded more like early Wakeman than Rick does now. Agreed. It was a great shame his time with the ban...

I still love The Ladder & think it's one of the best late-period albums made by the giants of the seventies: including Pink Floyd, Genesis & ELP. It's a very fresh sounding album and although the band may have been working to their established Yes template, for me, the songwriting & playing is of a ...

Altho some of it seems padding, and Rick's been quoted as saying 'we could maybe have made a decent single album out of it', I think I also remember Eddie Offord saying a lot was actually cut out! Re: Yessong of the Week: The Remembering...

I can take the whole album but tend to wonder just what could have been made of it had it been "trimmed" down. Especially this side, it tends to "ramble" on. Of course to end up with one side at 12-15 minutes vs the others sitting at 18-20 would have left it "lopsided". I do think there is an unfin...

Re: Yessong (sort of) of the Week: Quartet (including single version of I'm Alive)

I don't dislike the lyrics, but they are a little on the twee side - there's too much in that self-referential stuff that strikes me as a little 'clever' in the 'Ted Rogers' stylee. [Sorry to my N American chums - he was a British comedian [after a fashion] and gameshow host whose mention will doub...
