Hmmm, remember when we used to do trivia here.

How about this one . . .

In what year was the original concept for the Relayer album cover first drawn by Roger Dean?

Simon.

okay, this is my trivia:

This topic has two replies (if you count this one, it has three)... but the topic menu says '1 reply'. I'll just check if this will happen again.

Ed of course is 100% right and one of the reasons that I find this interesting is that when I first got the albums I had always imagined Dean to be totally inspired by the music. More than that Dean states in Views that Relayer is his favourite Yes album.

However, the fact that the initial concept was produced in 1966 would run counter to this. I still believe though that there is an element of the music shaping the art as the original concept (shown below) is still a far cry from the final masterpiece that graced the album. You have to also suspect that the music reflected the choice of concept from Dean's collection.
From the book, Dean's version is as follows . . .

quote:
I cannot say that the music is ever a direct inspiration for my work. However, the music, the title and the art work are all related and must all affect each other to some degree.

And the original plan for the image that Dean had certainly fits "Gates of Delirium", Dean's aim was to . . .

quote:
produce a giant gothic cave. A sort of fortified city for military monks; a secret stronghold for a fantasy knight's templar.

And I still wonder if the snake was an addition inspired by the song, representing the evil of war that affects even the minds of good men.

A final thought, who's to say that the entire idea for Gates didn't spring from Jon seeing that original concept drawing. I guess we'll never know for sure . . .

But if you haven't got it I'd strongly recommend the purchase of Views, it still appears on eBay regularly.

Simon.
