NO MORE MIDI

Gone, deleted, out of the mix.

There are only REAL INSTRUMENTS played by REAL PEOPLE now. Here's the latest mix from this morning:

http://youtu.be/mAEdhDoquPU

Here's who's on it so far:

Lead Vocals: Perpetual Changer
Backing Vocals: Ed

Guitars: Psychopomp, Guilddigger, Ingnozac, Ed

Keyboards: Relayer

Bass: Aventure

Drums: Hammar

I still haven't added all of psycho's guitar parts, I'll try to get to that later today.

Well, having downloaded and listened to each incarnation that has been posted, I must say Congratulations to EVERYONE involved, and especially to Ed for an absolutely wonderful job editing everyone in and getting it to sound, to this untrained ear, relatively seamless! I know that there's more to be done, but it's been fascinating to listen to a work in progress and hearing it evolve.. gives me a much greater appreciation for the engineering and production roles of creating the tunes the majority of us take for granted. I know I had no idea of the extent to which these things can change a recording, and kept forgetting that I was listening to a final product. Kinda makes me think twice about some of my uneducated judgemental statements I've made in the past about various songs that haven't "tripped my trigger", so to speak. Ignorance isn't a bad thing, provided it's cured with education... thanks for educating me, Ed and all that have been involved in this, even if that education was in a roundabout way (pun intended)......

Anyways, a hearty CONGRATS to all of you.. this sounds great!

Tom

Fantastic, well done you all!! and special thanks to Ed ofcourse!!
ST has become one of my favorite songs. Especially since I've heard it live in the Yes symphonic tour in Amsterdam 2001. And its on the Yes symphonic tour DVD, wich was recorded there, as well.
The big fan Jon refers to as the one who persuaded him to play ST, was me actually ;-))

This is really fine stuff here folks. You are all to be commended for your efforts. Though I haven't participated, hopefully you folks will accept this simple observation as constructive criticism. There is an obvious drag in the movement beginning with "Speak to me of summer"---1st time around. I think it's one of the guitars. Of course, you guys can all tell me to go to hell and I'll take that and run with it. Ed, did you ever add the rest of my guitar (as per the original post)? I only ask because I haven't downloaded the MP3 yet - 12 MB is a LONG time when you're on dialup!
Looking forward to listening to it!

Ed,

Lovely job at ST! Magical! This rendition is really growing on me. The thing you've done is a magical dream come true.

Why did you choose to us a MIDI file instead of the original studio track as the "mirror"? Was it so everone could controle the mix themselves durring tracking?

Ed, What did you do on it?

Can I answer this??

We used midi because its easier to record your own part in cubase, you can let the midi play along and record your part at the same time.
You can, ofcourse, take the drumtrack out whitch would be impossible in an audio track.
We had to be very accurate with timing, it all had to fit in the mix and nothing beats the midi there!

Hammer/Ed,

I have to in a way disagree with ya'll there......I fined that midi files are lacking in "ghost notes" especially with the snare drum. As well, they are transduced from the original source and therefore have "flaws" in many places in the score(tracks) and totaly lack organic feel..If we just used the original studio tracks(bounce to mono) as the source and start with the drums then pass the session to the bass then to the guitar then keys, human voice's.....what we will end up with is a far superior product in the end.

Plus, you menssion useing cubass....if everyone is useing cubass or cakewalk or logic then that means everyone can do a mixdown in the end....not just Ed. Then well all Vote on witch Mix is the best and there we have it......

I believe we should post all trackfiles for all involved to take into consideration.

Also, It should be noted that I've tryed both ways(midi scratch/studiotrack) many many many many times.

Hammer, Thank you for your reply.

If we could possibly get aholed of highquality miditracks that actually sync up with the original stereo 16bit 44.1kH studio cuts.......MmHmm. :spank

That way we could do this both ways....and there'by fit to everyones studio setups.

Hey though, I'm not really opposed to tracking with a sequencer playing the score. Nope, I would do it anyway Ed likes on his projects.....Oh, and your project too for that matter Hammer.

If I have an audio file to work with (AIFF or WAV) and I fit what I'm playhing over it exactly, and send it as a stand alone stereo file, then it should sync up to any original AIFF or WAV I'm sent, right?
I'm not too interested in playing with a MIDI file because, 1. I don't have anything set up to play it and 2. I'd rather play based on real performances that I can hear.
The trouble with going from the original studio track either with midi or even just playing along with the recording is that it negates any possibilities of some VARIETY. I'm all for being true to the original, but if you want an exact clone, what's the point? Why not just listen to the record?
Just my two cents.

-Steve

terry- long time no see! are you still posting music to the OMDs?

we bailed when we started getting plays on the PRRN stations,
the gagliarchives, the Rradionetwork.
i see the station mgrs. as that vetting system we discussed
back when at 1sound.

if you haven't heard, i'm no longer solo.
the current lineup consists of a bunch of guys i'm sure you remember,
steve hall of the questionnaires on guitars, von babasin de ONOFFON
on bass, and recently we added joel kelly on vocs.
if you get a chance, check out the 1st full band tune "majiker".
it's as close to classic prog as you'll find in OMD land IMO.

if you guys need a hand w/ keys or production on "and you and I",
give a yell.

Thanks Kirk. What we really need are drums, bass and a steel guitar player. I'm sure we could use your production talents though since I don't have any. :)

Great job guys. very nice indeed.
I often cast out a net , searching for like minded musicians in the south east of the UK with a view to playing some of this glorious yes music but alas , the net always returns empty... :(

Loving the grand finale to the song you guys did...yes it rocks...fine job all round :)

I just found this site last night and the virtual band is super. I have followed Yes since the late 60's and was in the first band i Washington DC that played a few yes songs. I have been playing drums since I was 13 and would love to participate in the virtual band if possible. Let me know.
