You've gotta love Plant's voice in classic lead: jagged and totally on the edge. Waters had amazing flexibility and personality in Floyd; reaching amazing highs, calling on scary tones, bordering on insanity at times as well as heartfelt compassion with his singing.
Those are a couple of my favorite all-time rock singers. Jon is definitely in my top 3. He has great rhythm, emotion, and range.

JON is "THE MAN" with a trademark sound that has stayed true and strong for over 3 decades! I also enjoy the other extreme in vocals such as Johnny Winter, Jim Dandy of Black Oak, Ian Anderson of Tull, Joe Cocker from Mad Dogs days, Leon Russell, Jack Bruce,Ian Gillan of Deep Purple and of course JIMI.

Jon is number One in my book. And it's a bias I can live with. A close second is Peter Gabriel, both with Genesis and solo - <u>The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway</u> and <u>So</u> being amongst my favorites. Ian Anderson of J.Tull - <u>Thick as a Brick</u> and <u>Passion Play</u> are fine examples of his breadth. And finally, and oddly enough, Greg Lake. Not so much from ELP days, but the amazing vocals on King Crimson's <u>In the Court of the Crimson King</u> - from the fingernails on the blackboard sound of "21st Century Schizoid Man" to the title track he shows amazing range. But top dog is (and always will be) Jon. Just listen to "Gates."

I agree with the mentions of Peter Gabriel. Now, I know a lot of members here look down upon Phil Collins because he came in and spoiled your party for Genesis. However, I still think Phil had a great voice and was a good writer, maybe not as progressive, but heartfelt nonetheless.
In any event, I'd like to add to my Roger Waters mention above. I'm surprised others have not agreed. His versatility, IMHO, is unmatched. Look at The Wall for instance. If one who had never heard of Pink Floyd before, was to listen to this album, they just might think there were several singers. At times, like in Mother, Goodbye Blue Sky, and Hey You, his voice is calm, peaceful, melodic, even reaching beautiful tones. At other times, such as in Young Lust, Another Brick in the Wall II, and Run Like Hell, his voice rocks. Then, he morphs into another character: dark, eerie, even scary, such as in Empty Spaces, Don't Leave Me Now, The Thin Ice, and In the Flesh. Finally, near the end of the album, once you think he's pulled out all the stops, he goes crazy, psychotic, and takes on a looney character that he even sings about such as in Waiting for the Worms and The Trial. Wow! what creativity and emotion.

<font face='Comic Sans MS'>there were several singers in pink floyd. well, at least two, gilmour did his fair share of lead vocals too. often did they take over from one another. like 'dogs' on 'animals', gilmour sings the first parts and in the last verse waters take over. in 'mother' gilmour sings the choruses and i think he's the one singing 'young lust'. 'hey you' is also gilmour. i think he sings most parts on dark side...'as well. gilmour's got a very good voice come to think of it.</font id='Comic Sans MS'>

I agree with the mentions of Peter Gabriel. Now, I know a lot of members here look down upon Phil Collins because he came in and spoiled your party for Genesis. However, I still think Phil had a great voice and was a good writer, maybe not as progressive, but heartfelt nonetheless.
In any event, I'd like to add to my Roger Waters mention above. I'm surprised others have not agreed. His versatility, IMHO, is unmatched. Look at The Wall for instance. If one who had never heard of Pink Floyd before, was to listen to this album, they just might think there were several singers. At times, like in Mother, Goodbye Blue Sky, and Hey You, his voice is calm, peaceful, melodic, even reaching beautiful tones. At other times, such as in Young Lust, Another Brick in the Wall II, and Run Like Hell, his voice rocks. Then, he morphs into another character: dark, eerie, even scary, such as in Empty Spaces, Don't Leave Me Now, The Thin Ice, and In the Flesh. Finally, near the end of the album, once you think he's pulled out all the stops, he goes crazy, psychotic, and takes on a looney character that he even sings about such as in Waiting for the Worms and The Trial. Wow! what creativity and emotion.

And as for Disney Phil, we don't critisize his musical talent...he is still a powerhouse drummer and fine vocalist...it's when he slams the very music he was a part of, and kisses the Punk movement's ass in acknowledging that bands like Genesis and Yes were overblown, pretentious farts...that's right folks, good ol' Phil actually puts down Yes in a recent documentary...this coming from a pinhead who makes his money writing music for a fucking cartoon! Oh, enough of me bitching, here's my fav's of the vox:
1.) Freddie Mercury-Positively the best frontman rock will ever see, and possesor of a voice that's still my favorite...and a wonderful songwriter and pianist
2.) Greg Lake-When he was younger, this fabulous musician had an angelic voice that sent shivers down my spine!
3.) Jon Anderson-Probably the only singer of a seminal rock band dating back to the late sixties that really hasn't lost any range on his voice, as he continues to be a wonderment to behold...lot's of energy and enthusiasm for a man his age.
4.)Frank Sinatra-this man could sing anything and make it sound substantial, no matter what the material and how many musicians he had playing with him...an icon of the likes you'll never see again...and one Jon's biggest influences!
5.)Paul Rogers-Terribly underrated singer who is still at the top of his game voice-wise...terrific voice!

Well, I'd like to believe that this is all a matter of opinion, and in mine, Waters was a great singer. In fact, I like his style better than Gilmour's.
Also, I find it fascinating how you command the power of being able to speak for others. Maybe Waters did think of himself as a great singer. Afterall, it's a common opinion the man was nothing but full of himself. So, perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to speak on behalf of others. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong and you've actually had this conversation with him and he would tell me he wasn't a great singer. But, I do no you can't speak on my behalf. I don't own Dark Side of the Moon.

This is what I would say about Waters. His singing struck me as being from the heart, so emotionally stressful.
I can say I've learned a great deal from this discussion, which was never intended to be centered around Waters, however life seems to take its own turns, so here we are.
While I admire Waters as a singer and songwriter, I'd like to finish this seg of the rap here by saying Jon Anderson takes the cake between the two.

Well, I'd like to believe that this is all a matter of opinion, and in mine, Waters was a great singer. In fact, I like his style better than Gilmour's.
Also, I find it fascinating how you command the power of being able to speak for others. Maybe Waters did think of himself as a great singer. Afterall, it's a common opinion the man was nothing but full of himself. So, perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to speak on behalf of others. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong and you've actually had this conversation with him and he would tell me he wasn't a great singer. But, I do no you can't speak on my behalf. I don't own Dark Side of the Moon.

This is what I would say about Waters. His singing struck me as being from the heart, so emotionally stressful.
I can say I've learned a great deal from this discussion, which was never intended to be centered around Waters, however life seems to take its own turns, so here we are.
While I admire Waters as a singer and songwriter, I'd like to finish this seg of the rap here by saying Jon Anderson takes the cake between the two.

waters sang the songs that suited or needed his voice and gilmour on the songs that only he could do justice. and let's not forget, richard wright did some incredibly good vocals too.

He is definitely ranks as one of the alltime great vocalists.
IMHO he sits comfortably alongside Robert Plant, Greg Lake, Fish,
Geddy Lee and Freddie Mercury. However, I've only ever heard 2 albums
where I have simply listened in astonishment to the vocalists. Both of these albums still blow my mind every time I listen to them and i

Jon is a great vocalist. I also happen to think that Chris' contributions are extremely important to making Yes' signature sound, and Jon without Chris is not as good vocally (ABWH, for instance).
My personal favorites are Steve Walsh and Peter Gabriel. Both of these guys put tons of passion into their performances.
