Initiation to Yes Guru-ship
What will be impressed upon those aspiring to the lofty heights of Yes Englightenment, through apprenticeship with the airy Guru one finds within or without, will consist in these tenets of discipline:
1. Abstention from alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, MSG,nitrates, processed sugar, etc. That means no beer, coffee, regular tea, chocolate, etc.
2. Vegetarian diet. We see no value in consuming dead creatures. Moderate intake of animal fats such as butter, milk, etc.
3. Refrain from exorbitant lust.
4. Curb the appetite for excessive wealth by pinning down greed , nipping it in the bud, and in lieu , encourage the healthy distribution of wealth.
5. Avoid the trappings of organized religion
6. Limit television watching. Avoid programs that enflame desires for material objects and fashion model standards.
7. Remove the ego from your daily life and seek a righteous means of earning a living
8. Avoid being a spectator of brutal sports like football, boxing, wrestling.
9. Trust not conventional means of information about the world. Watch CNN with scepticism.
10. If you are a pack a day smoker, realize that you are committing a sin . Excessive use of tobacco goes beyond the practical use enjoyed by are native forebears on this continent.

Lately, I've done some research on this and have found that the frutarian diet is perhaps our natural diet. On this diet, one eats mainly fresh, raw fruits with a small intake of leafy green vegetables. However, it has been tested and proven that man can live on fruit alone. Morever, not only can we live on it, but we actually attain a high degree of vitality and health, cleansing our bodies and reaching a zone beyond Mr. Atkins' zone.

Sorry Landon, but screw that! I think Eddie Offord did quite well, and Rick had his fun--moderation in all things, including moderation is my ethos--even Jon likes a cheeseburger and glass (or three) of wine.
Ascetism is not a natural doorway to enlightenment--indeed, sometimes excess reveals a path that could never be discovered othewise. Many paths to the one, some involve slippery slopes . . .

I fully agree. All paths are the way, for all have been traveled and have achieved some kind of enlightenment. To live, to see, to experience, and to be is our essence.

Can't say as I find it easy to give up wine and (occasionally) beer. Totally with you on avoiding processed foods etc. Shame it's so bloody expensive which leads to:

Personally I follow a stone age diet approach which means I can eat meat. Sorry I failed again. Mind you it's a healthy option - but I guess not for the animals.

Good calls. I tend towards something akin to Taoism which IMO avoids many of the traps of institutional religion and for that matter organised, deluded theocracy.

Over here it's Murdoch, but the sentiment is the same.

THE LIST:
1&2 No can do, but more power to you! If I'm lucky and carry most of my family "genes" (physically) I don't have anything to worry about. My grandfather lived to 2 months shy of 106! He ate his food cooked in "lard", smoked, drank, had 9 children and same wife (my grandmother lived to 98!) for 65 years! He just didn't let "life" stress him out, etc. STRESS KILLS!! Morally/ethically I understand the essence of 1&2 and if it works for you then go for it! I'm having Turkey and Dressing on Thanksgiving and I'm not worrying about it!
3 Some "lust" is good. I'll have to think about this one! I'm "lusting" right now to go to THE JOINT in Las Vegas to see YES IN CONCERT!
4-10 I'm behind 100% Great manthra! And my father-in-law is a Minister!!I get in trouble all the time in this area! There again "if it makes you happy" as the song goes, I just stand aside and let people do what works for them...I also have a bumper sticker on my car which is a "knock off" of WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?
Mine says WHAT WOULD OZZY DO? which goes over great in the church parking lot!!I enjoy being the "Black Sheep" on Sundays!
Thanks for the list, thought provoking! If I ever try to switch and follow 1&2 I'll let you know......3. WHAT WOULD OZZY DO?

I wonder how much of P's list the boys in the band follow, some, others not at all. I for one eat meat, drink alcohol occasionally, try to be kind to everyone, work for the better good of all through my charity's, lust whenever I can, don't care much for material goods, find my spirituality at the beach and in the trees, and most of all I love Yes music more than any other music in the world. What that makes me, heaven only knows.
Right now I am coming down off of major sedatives from a test I had to have done in the hospital, so this post might not make sense, or it could be the raw truth?

Even the Yes men aren`t gurus. Let`s not get carried away here. Sure they are great musicians and problay some of the nicest guys you would meet in this life, but I wouldn`t hold them up to guru standards. Even the Yesmen would agree with me.
Let`s dissect this;
1. Abstentation- No can do. I like most of the things you have described. Caffeine is vital for doing my job. How else would i last through thirteen hour shifts.? I love chocolate. Another quick energy source during work when i can`t get a break in. And alcohol???? Haaaaa!!!!! I am the Stoutman!!!! And that name was bestowed upon me by others.
2. There is no way in fucken` hell I am going on a vegetarian diet. Red meat is a very vital staple in my life. Luscious hunks of bloody, drippy meat I cannot do without. And I can`t have milk or butter. I`m lactose intolerant.
3.Exorbitant lust??? I don`t know know what you mean.
4. I`m not greedy in the least. I`m lucky I have apot to piss in.If I was greedy, I would have been a conniving shark that works on Wall Street. i`m just glad I can make some money to get by.
5. I was brought up Catholic. I even aspired to be a Catholic priest at one time. Nowadays, I don`t even attend church. I do pray, but that`s it.
6. I hardly ever watch TV. Most of it is just formulaic shit and whatever programs I would love to watch are usually over by the time i get home.
7.I am without ego. I know I`m just a useless scrub whose biggest pleasure in life seems to come from typing rants and raves on this forum. And there is no more humbling way of life than working out of tin boxes on wheels and getting dressed down by managers
8. I don`t even waste my time with wrestling. There are some knuckleheads who think this shit is real. I hardly watch boxing but when I do, I enjoy when one other fighter is getting the his ass kicked in. , but you have to admit, to stand there in the middle of the ring and to have your brains pummeled into jelly is an extreme act of bravery or stupidity. And I do like football, but baseball is my sport. That`s not too brutal unless a pitcher decks a batter at the plate with a 95mph fastball to the head
9. I don`t believe everything I hear ,read or see in the media.
10. I quit smoking some years back.
Hey, I`m no guru , not even close to being one, and have no intentions of doing so. Next!!!!.....

thanks for the thread, love the posts here
i'm goin' to keep this as short as possible
i am a YES fan from mid seventies
i was ALways into the celestial, spiritual, cleanse and purify, keys to heaven, at One with the Sun type stuff
meanwhile, i am drinking excessively nightly, up to two packs of cigs a day, and eating anything in site, including, nevermind, well, eating everything in site
and religion, organized or not, was like the black hole to me
within the past year or so, i have stopped drinking, smoking, eating meat (i still eat fish so not a vegan)
i talk to god everyday (that is MY god to the extent i imagine it)
and i love
we follow the sun, we follow the sun, we follow the sun
we are of the sun
BE forever

the way i see it, all these things mentioned above i.e. drugs, alcohol, tobacco, eating meat etc is not necessarily sinful. it's merely self abuse and i don't see how that is in conflict with being spiritual. so, if anyone has a drink or smokes a cigarrette or wolfs down a cheese burger, by all means do that as long as you don't hurt someone else, or forget to give love each day! those are sins.

We are spiritual beings living in human bodies- living a human life.
so we are all subject to the trapings brought on by our respective societys. To force youself to obstain from one particular activity or another out of some type of guilt. Winds up only being repressive .
ultimately what you need to do is recognise that you are more than you appear to be- that something is going on outside of your senses ability to see. after making that recognition . then the next step is to try through whatever means works for you to develop a relationship with that true self. it is I think nessisary for people to indulge in all sorts of worldliness in order to realize ,ultimately that it is empty or at least that it is not lasting. Truth it would seem , is something that is lasting .
in the final analysis God finds you
it is really only thru Grace that one is enlightened -or saved
the great religions of the world give us some guidelines to follow
until that day when Grace touches us.
we can see that letting go of materialism is a running theme in the teachings of all the great masters.
but the materialism they really refer to
is belief that this material existance is all that there is.
it is said that the truly important things
are the things you cant see.
in my personal consideration
those things are also the things that are unchanging
undying truths.
until something lights that spark within your heart
which causes you to exaAmine these truths .
we dont have much else but this material existance .
we are all of us at different points along that spiritual path.
the begginning and the end of the journey is the same for us all.
and we are all connected by a thread that is we are all connected to the source of all creation - which would seem to imply intent ,an intent to create - so we are connected to that creation we are connected to each other and we share a common beggining .
ultimately this brings me to the conclusion that we are all pretty much the same. if the intent of creation began with energy . than we are energy . if you compare sound energy to light energy you will see
that light energy vibrates at a faster rate - we know that there are types of light energy our eyes cannot perceive because it vibrates at such a fast rate of speed. this energy is also of the creeation
so it also contains intent.
persons who partake in activities that some would consider "sinful"
are actually just allowing there conciousness to vibrate at a lower slower rate. we all develop and evolve spiritually at different rates . any attempt to move that process along any faster than it is meant to move along only results in repression. the sinfull behavior falls away on its own as the love of God and understanding of self increases. otherwise we are like an apple sitting on a tree saying to ourselves "I gotta get ripe I gotta get ripe I gotta get ripe"-when all along the rain is falling the sun is shining and its happening.
we give our selves too much credit - we really do nothing.
Yes music in and of itself is a tool along that path-its like the sugar that the medicine is in- from a musical standpoint it makes us think of perfection- from a lyrical stand point it asks us to find our true self!
so we are all subject to the trapings brought on by our respective societys.

Yeah, I ate two burgers last night, had coffee this morning, and smoked a cigarette while watching the waves come from the haze of brown smog off Santa Monica Bay,remembering my surfing days, trapped in a 85-degree oven of Devil Winds (Santa Ana) conditions..........
