i turned scarlet red from n2´s kind words in the 'remembering' topic, "Is there a more amiable soul than Guilddigger? ...If he represents the general demeanor of the typical Swede, hell, I'm moving to Stockholm next week!!"
well, it would be interesting to get your impressions of us swedes. we did this about brazil and indonesia, now it´s time for the cold north. so, what is your general picture of sweden? to help you out there´s a webcam in my town at,

Well I've met very few Swedes and then only through work. However, a few of my friends have lived and worked in Stockholm and they are united in their beliefs that the coldness of the winter weather is more than countered by the warmth of the welcome that they got.

Actually I'm going to spend the next three days in meetings including a guy from Stockholm!

Simon.

Hi, My impressions about Sweden mostly come from my husband and his family, and my grandmother who came from Norway. We have a picture of a house that was my husbands grandfathers called "Carl's Bgytt." All of the Swedish relatives are super nice, and the Peterson's in general are friendly, hard working, and fun to eat and drink with.

I always think cold and snowy, which seems to be true. I also think "sturdy and hearty" I also think blonde. Everyone says my daughters look like little Swedish girls because of their white hair? Is it true that there are alot of blondes?

I also think of Ikea. You know, the furniture store. I like the "Swedish look" in decorater magazines.

It's so nice to talk to someone from Sweden, it's nice to meet you guilddigger!!

Guil,N2 is right. If you are any indication of how the Swedes really are, then it must be a friendly place to vsit. I have never been to your country, but hopefully, eventually.
My impressons of your country are this; The weather is quite cold all year round and due to the lack of sunlight, a lot of Swedes suffer from SAD(SEasonal Affective Disorder). And is the landscape fjordlike?
The woman are blonde and buxom(probaly would be a highlight of the trip for me). The group ABBA was once your most famous export.
In any case,I have to get over there.

maanga gaanger har jag varit i Sverige...

i have many dear friends in Sweden (Goeteborg) and am quite familiar with their people, their customs (snaps!), etc.

Swedes love tradition. it seems every week or so there is some special observation or a special meal that everyone partakes in (eg, midsommar, kraeftor festen - i don't know if i spelled that right).

Swedish women ARE blonde but are NOT buxom - are you thinking of Xena Stoutman? they are beautiful. they are blue eyed, slim and tall. (Brigit Neilson, who is Danish, might stand out in a crowd in Sweden but not as much as you might think).

Swedes have very pleasant English accents that sound nothing like the way they're portrayed in American movies.

socialism works for those Swedes that believe in it. the rest move to America.

Swedes are critical of America in the ways that America deserves to be criticized (Swedes are pacifists afterall - just ask the Norwegians) but Swedes LOVE America. it is one big Disneyland to them - from sea to shining sea. given the chance, most would move to California in a heartbeat.

and they have big hearts. me and my (then) wife felt like minor celebrities when we were there the way so many Swedes went out of their way to be hospitable and to include us in their lives (and invite us to their parties!). living abroad is not as much fun as you might think if you feel like an outsider. the Swedes welcomed us as their own and there was never a dull moment.

Snow, saunas, ABBA, Volvo, Guildigger.

Forgive my ignorance, but that is a brief summary of my Swedish knowledge!

A traditionally neutral nation on the very large Scandinavian Peninsula. Bordered by the Gulf of Bothnia and Finland to the east and Norway to the west ( and north ), It is a fairly large nation geographically speaking and has a population approaching 9 million. At one time, Sweden possesseed an internationally respected military which in some respects, is still considered a top-notch force.
I would imagine that winters in the north are brutal with those in the south being somewhat more tolerable. I don't see it as a very mountainous nation, probably no peak rises higher than 10,000 feet. However, lakes must abound. It truly must be a beautuful place and definitely one of the top countries on my 'must-see' list ( along with Norway ). I admit to having what may be a stereotypical image of sex being a not-so-rigidly viewed act in Sweden as compared to the "SHHHHH" treatment given it in other western countries. Fill me in, Guild. Curious minds simply must know!

Sweden? Never heard much about it and its people. All I know, once there was ABBA(I like them!). Then maybe IFK Goeteborg (my favorite Sweden soccer team), Volvo limos which are used by ministers in Indonesia, and how cold Sweden is?

Well, genetically, I am part Norse. Just through the English line--my grand-father was an obvious Viking, tall, blonde, and dour, even if it all was filtered through Northumbria. I do have kinda Asgardian tastes . . .

I vastly prefer Swedish brunettes. And the ones I know possess very beautiful, if not overly large breasts . . .

I do have the impression of Swedish culture being somewhat somber and forbidding. Grey skies, Ingmar Bergman, yadda yadda yadda.

But I love rain and hate snow. I just turned out more of a Celt that had to grow up in a German enviroment. That sucked . . .

and here are the correct answers,
yes, no, no, yes, no, yes, no way!!!!!, well some do, no...

very interesting postings all.

fragilesi, it´s true, here in the north it can get pretty cold in the winter. i say we have nine months of winter and three months of bad skiing. summerdays can get quite hot, but night time you usually need to put on a sweater when temps drop. at least here in the north

pleased to meet you too jo, thanks for the nice mail. lots of blondes yes, but dark hair is just as common i think. ikea, the put-it-together-yourself-furniture. cheap stuff that falls apart after and IF you can put it together.

sound chaser, turnips aren´t half bad! had a lot of that in ireland.

stout, if you make it here i´ll always have room for you. fjordlike? that would be hennie´s home norway.
the dark winters are made up of the white nights in the summer. from mid may till late july it´s light at night. if you pass the arctic circle you see the midnight sun. the girls? get over here and i´ll introduce you to them!

innerpact, you have been here i can tell. yes the traditions are important to many swedes. like getting dead drunk at new years, easter, midsummer, and all the other holidays. lots of holidays here.

ed, you summed it up pretty good

jack, of course we have orgies! except outdoors wintertime. too rough on the knees

nine lives, the swedish erotica i believe is american made...

n2, forever the walking geographic encyclopedia! yes the lakes are counted by the thousands upon thousands and they come in all different sizes. mountains aren´t very alpish either, they were scraped down when the big ice headed south some tens of thousand years ago. (remember the clan of the cave bear, folks?)
oh yeah, the sex thing! right, fornication taking place anywhere at anytime and with any body. seriously, we´re pretty open minded about it, but then again it´s not the usual topic at the dinner table.
sex before mariage? well, duh!

sandya, football or soccer is very big here and goteborg is one of the top teams. i think they won the european cup once. (i´m not a big soccer fan). volvo´s are very expensive and extremely safe cars but booooring to drive. myself, i drive an audi.

ray, we look upon denmark as the very opposite of sweden. seems like anything goes there! matter of fact i think they laugh at us and all our rules and regulations. a friend of mine from finland commented about that: 'won´t be long till they make you put headlights on your coffee mug'! not that far from the truth, traffic laws are very strict, driving without the safety belt is a violation, let alone drink and drive, where you lose the licence and go to jail without passing 'go', (if caught ). all for safety of course. but some rules you wonder about...

proff, part norse? let´s go berserk and plunder!
i prefer brunettes too, tho in my case she happens to be american!

meech, you´d fit in just fine here!

hope i have straightened out some

My perception of the Scandinavian countries in general (along with the Dutch) is that you are generally fairly permissive (in a good way), tolerant and socially enlightened.

Far more outward looking than us Brits as a whole but still quite Anglophile - which is reciprocated by most of us. Small in population but vast and spectacular in landscape - racially and temprementally in a similar mold as us limeys, (especially if you're from the North of England where the dialect still retains some of its Viking roots).

The down side is that Sweden is a fairly 'dry' country (when alcohol is available it's prohibitively expensive) and also for a lot of the time fairly cold and dark - which is something I'd prefer to have less of in the UK!

Hey Guilddigger. I'll just hang on to this one. Any impressions of Norway? Everybody knows Norway is a city in Sweden, right? Well, I guess you're all enlightened people here on YesTalk. Sweden/Norway has a kind of big brother/little brother relationship, we tease each other a lot, but are fairly good neighbours when it comes down to it.
It's strange to see how everybody thinks of erotic movies when Scandinavia is mentioned. I guess Denmark has allways been very liberal, and even Sweden I guess, but 90% of porn movies over here comes from Hollywood. Norway, I think, has produced 1. That doesn't mean Norwegian women aren't quite free spirited, but in a nice way, I think.
If you come to this part of the world, the last thing to worry about is the language. Most people speak English pretty well, and love it when they get a chance to show it. (In fact, I have worked with English guys on several occations, and they have a hard time learning our language, not because they're lazy, but because everybody speaks English to them. Some have stayed for years here without speaking Norwegian!)
Chris, your'e right about expensive alcohol, but I think that Britain (London) is coming along as well, is it 2 1/2 - 3 pounds for a pint these days? Remember when I could get quite happy for a pound!

What I know is precious little, except I remember a Bruce Springsteen broadcast from Sweden where it was mentioned that a heatwave had arrived, and it was 75-80 deg. Fahrenheit that July 4. That while I melted at 95-100 deg. F. in North Carolina that day.

Other than that, my knowledge is limited to the exploits of Sweden's golf exports - Anika and Charlotta Sorenstam, Helen Alfredson, Lisalotte Neuman, and Jesper Parnivek, among others. Sorry for any incorrect spellings.
