A listeners' poll on UK digital Radio station Planet Rock sees our Jon at number 14 in the list (ahead of Bruce Springsteen, and Peter Gabriel) which is headed - perhaps not surprisingly at the moment, by Zep's Robert Plant. At #2 is Freddie Mercury, and at #3, is Free/Bad Company & now Queen Front man Paul Rodgers.

The full list courtesy of NME:-
1. Robert Plant (LedZeppelin)
2. Freddie Mercury (Queen)
3. Paul Rodgers (Free/Bad Company)
4. Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)
5. Roger Daltrey (The Who)
6. David Coverdale (Whitesnake)
7. Axl Rose (Guns N’ Roses)
8. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
9. Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones)
10. Bon Scott (AC/DC)
11. David Bowie
12. Jon Bon Jovi (Bon Jovi)
13. Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)
14. Jon Anderson (Yes)
15. Bruce Springsteen
16. Joe Cocker
17. Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)
18. Bono (U2)
19. Peter Gabriel
20. James Hetfield (Metallica)

Dont see Phil Collins on the Top 20!

So well done Jon, more power to your recovery!

Marc

That's a way strange list. Makes you wonder what the criteria was. Much as I like to see Jon's in there, he's not what I'd consider a 'rock' voice - Bowie and Gabriel neither for that matter. There are some surprising omissions too along with predictable cack like Bon Jovi and Coverdale. Personally even though I'm not a huge fan of Slade, personally I think Holder is the quintessence of a rock singer. It is after all a bit of a list of fogeys isn't it - you could expect to see T Rex in there I think (I mean the dinosaur, not Marc Bolan).
I used to be agnostic. These days I'm not so sure.

For the life of me, I've never understood Ozzy Osbourne's vocal appeal.

So where the heck is IAN Anderson? And Eddie Vedder...rock and roll grit and anguish personified...I love his voice. Lots more in the prog vein, too. Hm, that gives me an idea for my Thread of the Month. :)

James Hetfield? Fine for what he does with Metallica but a top-20 "best rock voice?"

Too bad they never defined "rock voice" because that sure covers a lot of territory. And why no women??? Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Chrissie Hynde, Bonnie Raitt?

In any event, I think Jon belongs on the very top of the list of top voices, period.

And Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Alanis Morrissette, Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin? WHY are female rock singers SO overlooked? I mean, Mick Jagger is as good a front man as ever existed but while distinctive, his voice is hardly amongst the best of all rock voices.

These types of lists tending be subjective at best, but it should be about a band member's voice, not the band voice's member...

"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"...???

I'm going to throw a name out here that may sort of mystify you. It's Fergie Frederiksen. You might have to Google him to get an idea of who he is because he was one of these people that had an amazing voice and an amazing voice range but always seemed to be in the wrong place. His strongest brush with success was probably his one album tenure with Toto where he sang "Stranger In Town" with David Paich. For you pure prog rockies, his style may not be your cup of tea. Despite that, if you want to hear a really good album, albeit a bit poppy, check out Mecca (released in 2002). That's the name of the band and the only album they put out. Fergie shared lead vocal duties with Joe Vana. Other members included Mike Aquino, David Hungate, Shannon Forrest, Jimmy Nichols, Jim Peterik, Barb Unger, Thom Griffin and John Melnick. It's great music and displays some great vocal talent and range on behalf of Fergie.
