Who's on?

Post: # 691Post Ed Schaum

We've had some requests for a "who's online" module. I've always stayed away from that sort of thing, sometimes people want to check in without being announced.

But I came across a module that did most of what I was hoping for, and didn't require too many changes for it to work with the board.

I've been testing it for several weeks now, and it's mainly pretty accurate. Sometimes it misses people, and it's definitely not counting everyone because some pages aren't being polled properly, but I can work on that and make it more accurate over time.

I think it also doesn't pick up members who are chatting, but these are all things I can fine-tune.

If I put the module online, you'll be able to see exactly which members are browsing along with how many guests are visiting.

You'll also have an option in your profile to go "anonymous" in the who's on list.

Do we want this feature here?

i think it could be nice to see who´s here at the moment. as it is now we pass each others like ghosts. the only trace we have is when someone has posted in a forum. perhaps it makes it easier to connect in the chatroom as well. do i sound lonely and desperate?

Ed, I think that would be great, I haven't had the opportunity to chat with anyone live, and this might give me the chance.

I also have a question for you, is there a way to change my screen name, I am uncomfortable using my last name, but I made the mistake of putting my real name in.

Thanks Ed, for such a great site!!!

Well, it's now live, so you should be able to see who is here... provided they haven't gone into stealth mode.

As far as your user name, I think I can change it without any problem. Just email me and I'll fix it right away.

oh no, here we go again with the thanks thing. I appreciate it in2, gd, and jo, but as I always say, it's you guys that make this place what it is, not me. I should be thanking all of you for making it such a cool place to be.

Seems to be working, Ed. I'll try turning off stealth mode and see if I show up!

Seems cool to me, but I have a question: is the first in line the last person to log on? Is there any significance to the order? Enquiring minds, and all that . . .

Ah, gee! Now I can't sneak in and out anymore! Not good for a lurker! Can't decide if I want to "remain anonymus"! It all depends on my mood at the time...

So much for slipping in and out of the shadows. I guess I can have no secrets here.

Always making me work, eh, prof?

I checked it out for a while, and it seems like when you hit the site, your name appears at the beginning of the list. As others arrive, your name moves to the right.

Sure you can. Everyone now has an extra selection in your profile.

If you're feeling exposed, just go into stealth (anonymous) mode and your name won't show up on the list.

There's something like that at another board I go to... it's really helpful there when I'm hiding from someone O_o

I think it's nice for those who enjoy having the option. Personally, I don't forsee anytime when I'll need it but, what the hell, that's just me. Oh yeah, I forgot to ask Hydro who he plans on hiding from. Hey Hydro...
