ok
the"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
is a scream I had to let out.
I was feeling a little nostalgic
and so I decided to look up the local papers review of the last Yes concert (during the "YESsymphonic tour prior to the release of Magnification)
and I read this very frustraqting review
from a small minded ass
http://www.jsonline.com/onwisconsin/mus ... 081601.asp
no wonder the band isnt coming to Milwaukee this year.
Waht a drag

Hahhaa! That was one of the funniest things I've read. When you get down to the nitty gritty, prog rock can be a bit rediculous, we like it, but compared to "normal" music...
You know what-he doesn't say flat out that Yes sucks, but when you think about it, everything he said was true! <img src=pix/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
But that's why I love 'em! Bring the bombast! <img src=pix/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

If you ask me, it looks like one of Bliss's commentaries.
But, hey, we're all entitled to our opinions, aren't we?
Sure we are! The screwed up thing is when people speak their opinions as if they are truth; no humility, no respect, no class.
Oh well, at least we know the truth, as it comes to us...Yes rocks! And always will!
So, if I may take a line from The Rock: to all you Yes haters, you can take your disappointments, your negativity, polish them up nice a pretty like so they shine with your arrogance, turn them sideways, and shove them straight up your pompous ass!

That's just one of MANY negative, uninformed, pompous, idiotic, etc...
reviews that's been written about our guys. I'm sure they wouldn't allow a feeble minded goat like that keep them from coming to Milwaukee(there must be some other reason)! He stated that there were "enough fans there to populate distant galaxies". This shallow dweeb is obviously a Britney Spears, Eminem, and Nsync worshiper! That's the only kind of music that ignorant snot can understand!<img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>

I read the review and laughed! <img src=pix/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> Not by way of thinking 'what an idiot', but rather 'how true on several levels'!
If you automatically assume that this critic 'only likes N Sync, Britney and Eminem', you're being WAAAYYY more narrowminded than most music listeners out there! Everyone has the right to dislike and even make fun of Yes if they feel like it, and it DOESN'T make them 'smallminded'... maybe they've genuinely given the band a listen and just don't like it!

C'mon, Psycho!
Let us vent our rage somewhere! For years I've read/listened to critics like that and I think I've been tolerant enough! IT'S TIME TO STAND UP AND LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD... SOMEWHERE!<img src=pix/salook.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>...HERE!

Well it really SHOULDN'T create 'rage' within you to see Yes getting slammed... after all, when it gets down to it, critics are just ordinary people who happen to get THEIR opinions published! <img src=pix/icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> It doesn't mean those opinions are more valid than anyone else's!
Don't take it so hard! <img src=pix/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
Basically, I have to agree with a lot of what he says in that review, even if I don't agree with the overall (ie. critical) stance of it!

Well personally I can't find much that I regard as <i>true</i> in this review. I think that what annoys me is that reviewers who clearly don't even like progressive rock get to write reviews of these shows. Why not send someone with at least some kind of empathy for the genre so that fans can judge what the concert was really like.
The only hint that it might have been a good show is the reference to the fans being enthusiatic. It's a bit like sending me to a rap show, I would simply despise it in all probability. However, I have a mind capable of reason and I would undoubtedly have the professionalism to reign in my prejudices and try to set it in context.
Most reviewers like this feel the need to appear clever and believe that slating bands that they don't understand is the right thing to do. I'll be honest, I gave up being annoyed about this stuff generally because they are just caricatures of reviews, mere three minute cartoons when set against the feature films of genuine, knowledgeabe criticism.
Having said that, if Yes played in my home town (unlikely but you never know) and the Posrtmouth News put out this kind of review I'd be round there like a shot to harangue them for their incompetence!
Simon.

I think I can explain this review with a few scenarios:
A. His hair brush was laced with a razor. That'd make me mad about things.
B. He was in a car wreck on the way to work.
C. He likes bands such as Menudo.
D. He doesn't understand the first thing about the band, but he decides he knows enough "big" words to provide a credible review.
E. All of the above.

This is a very petty reason to rage, but if that's what you want, go for it. Really, that's what most (non-Yes fan) prog fans think of Yes. Jon is fey, even most Yes fans admit to that. Yes is ready to go over-the-top at the drop of a hat, because they are arteests. Anybody, even my bud yesman90125, who let this get to them, are probably taking this (themselves) too seriously. And Chris, right after your enlightenment? I hope your scream helped, though, and nobody's throwing stuff at the reviewers or anybody. I would never do this, though, I'm too pompous.

I agree with this entirely. Would a newspaper send a pop journalist over to review a jazz concert? Or a roots music afficionado to review a classical concert? The same respect should be given to all types of music. The reader of the article would derive much more benefit if he/she read a review by someone who has some knowledge of this style of music - even if the review was not a good one - I am sure even Yes has put on the odd bad show.
However, this article doesn't tell the potential readership anything other than "I guess the reporter doesn't like this style of music"
So, in other words, you learn more about the personality of the critic than the concert itself.
There used to be a pathetic example of this on the Amazon site - the professional critic slammed progressive rock and Yes on a webpage that was trying to sell Yes product! Downright bizarre. And shameful. That review is now since gone after many complaints.

I think one of the things that annoyed me most about it, is the way the guy makes these really personal attacks on Jon ,he really throws
objectivity to the wind.
and Jackalz- speaking of taking things too seriously<img src=pix/jestera.gif border=0 align=middle> -it's only a topic in a message board- I'm not actually spun out that much about it .
just making conversation bro-<img src=pix/silly.gif border=0 align=middle>

That's kinda what I meant when I was thinking 'how true!' after reading the review! <img src=pix/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> Those comments can be taken either way!
And I don't think they were 'personal attacks' on Jon... he IS 'fey', I guess, and I've seen him do the 'maneuveur' that the critic referred to... at least he admitted Jon's voice wasn't to his taste, rather than JUST say 'the singer sucks!'
Basically, that review, while hardly kind, is a LOT more tolerant than, say, Rolling Stone's so-called 'review' of Talk!!! <img src=pix/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>

These are my thoughts exactly. This is really what makes me angry, too! And contrary to what some may think, I don't take this all too personally! So, I may have what some may consider wierd taste in music -- SO WHAT? YES is unique, so different than anyone else. That's one of the reasons we love them! I don`t know why some of you folks are getting upset by this; This crticism of the band has been happening since the release of Topographic Oceans. We should all be used to it,or immune to it by now. This isn`t the first time, nor it will be the last time you will see a review like this.
Obviously, the man`s ignorance is humorous because he is lacing into their choice of wardrobe. I`ll agree with him on that point, but what does this have to do with their music? It`s pointless and irrelevant. After reading his criticism of that, one should have stopped reading that article or laugh at it for the joke it is.
Honestly, how many of you listen to the critics when making your latest purchase of an album? I sure as hell don`t because when it comes to reviews of Yes albums,I know what to expect nowadays.

The reviewer is a punk, totally unfamilair with Yes' greatness. To him, if a song doesn't fit a 3 minute format with an easy tag line and can be covered by an average high school garage band then it is not good rock 'n roll. The tone of the review was a cuteness writing effort, not a review of great musicians.

I'm trying to understand what makes me so angry about those kind of critics. I guess what bugs me is there are probably a fair amount of ignorant (not dumb, not stupid) people who read that stuff and believe it, and therefore will never give YES a chance! They will never set foot at a concert, will never buy an album, will probably never hear a YES song as long as they live. To me, that's sad. To you, maybe that doesn't matter, but I happen to be one of those people who wants to see YES succeed! A lot can be said about a society by the type of music it participates in. I feel that in many ways our society has lost interest in high quality music. I realize that this may only be a phase, and the pendulum could swing back the other way. I can only hope so!<img src=pix/icon_yes_yes.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=pix/icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>

<font color=purple>Aside from the fact that DAVE TIANEN is a mean spirited ass, it gauls me that the bastard most likely got in to the concert for free taking a seat away from some YES fan that would have loved to have been there. I could only imagine what this jack-asses cd collection looks like! Can anyone guess, Back Street Boys, Brittany, .......

Yesman, pleae don`t take whatever i said personal. All I said was that I agreed with the man`s crack about their `wardrobe.' But I also did say it was inappropiate for him to even talk about that when it should be a review abou the music. I thought this man was the wrong person to be reviewing a yes concert as Simon so eloquently pointed out earlier. But the fact of the matter is that we have seen this type of review since the days of punk. It`s dated and should be laughed at for the ignorant joke that it is. After all, what are critics? What have they done except say to you buy this album or don`t buy this album? I personally don`t give a shit about the critics. When going off to see a movie,do you really think I`m going to watch Roger Ebert`s programm and seek his opinion out. As a fan of Clint Eastwood movies,I had found the majority of critics hated them, but that didn`t stop me from being a fan, nor did it upset me. My advice to you is to take a look at this site and witness the amount of members here. It is still growing and should be evidence enough to you that Yes is a great band and that their music is still appreciated throughout the world. Screw the critics!!!!!
