Concert Idea

Post: # 800Post TenVoices

Fact: Some bands have a large number of dedicated fans, like Yes.
Fact: Concerts from these bands have good turn-outs.
Fact: Most of these bands have large catalogs to choose setlists from.
Idea: Would it be feasible to play 2 dates in each city with the first date hitting the first half of the catalog, and the second date hitting the other half of the catalog?

For Yes, the first night would be focused on say Tormato backward. The next night would be Drama forward.

I don't think it would necessarily need to be back to back nights. It could be first leg of a tour and then the second leg of a tour.

Any thoughts on my idea?

I don't think it will work if you only have tracks from Drama forward. but I do think they could have 2 or 3 different setlists throughout the tour . and not changing 1 or 2 tracks per night, but completly different sets.
or they could do album by album trackchoosing.
so like this:

1st night 2nd night
Siberian khatru And you and I
Heart of the sunrise Roundabout
Revealing science Ritual
Parallels Wondrous stories

or track-length

Gates of delirium Close to the edge
On the silent wings Perpetual change

something like this

Good idea on the tracks. I mentioned Drama forward with the understanding that the "new" album would naturally have more tracks played.

In any event, I only threw those albums out there because it seemed a decent choice. Perhaps another split would work.

Yeah they should do more Magnification in the future, it's such a great album:
tracks like Give love each day, Dreamtime and Spirit of Survival would be awesome when played live.

a wonderful idea. but are you kidding? the lads are all in their 50s (Jon's gonna be 58 in October). do you think they have the energy to pull off a double-dip tour like that?

and, ahem, my yankee friend, there are a few other corners of the globe that are clamouring to be included. ya gotta share.

maybe they should do a few multi-nighters at select venues (London, New York, Philly, <<i>your home town goes here</i>>) and us die-hards could buy, beg, borrow, steal, etc. to make the pilgrimage.

i could see making my way down to Philadelphia and catching a few shows. i would be thrilled to hear a little more variety in the setlist.

First of all, I already dreamt this idea up...last year. In fact, I've brought it up a few times.

Now that I've gotten over that, I totally think this is a marvelous idea. In fact, I had proposed billing this as a double date, in which you could buy a combined ticket, good for both shows.

Indeed, Yes has too many great tunes that are ignored, and the only way to tap into that treasure trove is to have 2 setlists. Yeah, yeah, they're old and all that. Alright then, give them a day's rest in between shows.

Also, I think that both shows should be a true mix of material over their career.

It's a great idea TenVoices but I hope that they never do it because when tempered by reality this would mean that they played to half as many places. I also suspect that the average attendance per night would drop which wouldn't help them. I'd love to see such a double header but I can't see them doing it as a major tour.

Altair, smart minds think alike! I had thought about the combined ticket idea too. Maybe we should be consultants for the band.

As far as the age issue, that comment IMO doesn't hold water. Think of the amount of touring Yes has done recently. I think their age attributes to the fact of the tours being short, but they are touring every year or so now anyway. We've got the new dates soon, Mag just finished, the Ladder tour wasn't long ago, etc.

In actuality, I thought of the idea during the Union tour. Classic Yes one night, YesWest the next. Now that would have been fun.

Well, sometimes, in order to embark on a really cool journey, sacrifices must be made. In this case, I believe the pros outweigh the cons. True, there might be fewer locations. True, there might be fewer in attendance. However, think how incredibly awesome it would be to go to such a double billing, to see and listen to such a wealth of material from your absolute favorite band.

In fact, I think, if nothing else, they should try this idea out on at least a half dozen venues over the span of maybe nothing more than a month or two. They could choose the biggest cities in the world and reach fans from every corner of the globe.

In fact, they could hold a vote on Yesworld, letting the voters decide where the concerts would be. I can imagine New York, LA or San Francisco, Rio De Janiro, London, Sydney, Tokyo, and you can help me figure out the rest.

Maybe it would take two months. And, on top of that, the venues could be small ampitheaters, designed specifically for music.

Not only would a select number of places sell out, such an idea would be nothing short of "progressive" in nature.

Finally, make a DVD of the event. Hell, make it a double DVD of the event in honor of the idea. DoubleYES! It should happen later this year, while they still have Wakeman. They could add the show later this Fall. Call it 2002: The Yes 2&2 Tour.

Altair, I think that we are in agreement on this, the sentence you left out of quoting me sums it up;

Which means I absolutely agree with you<img src=pix/icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>.

Unnh... coldwater Chris here. Would I go and see such shows? Well I've seen two gigs on each of the last tours with similar/identical setlists so you can bet your arse on that one.

However. Look around at your next gig - notice the number of blank expressions when the band play anything from Magnification? That's right - they're just not like you and me are they? Bastards. Most of the concert's audience are only casual fans who are on a bit of a nostalgia trip. They haven't heard fucking Roundabout in years and have maybe bought one album (and didn't like it) since 90125. I think in order to make the double-headers viable they would have to be deceitful or otherwise put the later stuff together and look forward to a half-empty venue (yeah, even in major cities).

Personally I would consider it double-money very well spent but I think the number of Yesheads with our sort of enthusiasm is not that large anymore and those of us there are, are scattered around the globe...<img src=pix/icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

I wouldn't want to see two shows in a row because, quite frankly, I have a central nervous system disorder that makes me extremely sensitive to loud noises and I'm not sure my body or brain could tolerate two shows in two days. I do realize not everyone has this problem so I wouldn't expect the band to not do it because of that reason. I haven't been to a concert since my diagnosis but I'm pretty sure that two back-to-back shows would have me in pain for a week.

Here's a couple of ideas:

They used to do afternoon and evening shows (thinking of TFTO tour here) so why not do a short set in the afternoon, have a rest period, then an evening show.

Or do new stuff one tour, and old the next, and keep alternating. (Kind of late for this, don't know how many more they'll do!)

Now that's a good idea! I'd pay some serious money to see all of Tales live.

I've mentioned a similar idea long ago. That Yes should decide on a singular venue, not Branson, but like Branson, maybe at a natural amphitheater. Then instead of touring and moving every night, have people come to see them. It would be like a Yes Mecca. That way they could change there show every night. Instead of rushing around getting to the next venue, setting up the show, they could relax and work on what to play for the next show. They could have a section of the show for playing songs new additions, jamming, and experiments, then finish the show with a set of well-practiced favorites. I also thought that it would be cool if there would be a jam session with visiting musicians.

When I mentioned it last year, someone replied that they had a piece of land in Florida away from the masses, where folks could camp out for a week and hang out. I'll see if I can locate that thread, maybe that flame needs to be re-ignited.
