What is a Slurp Spider?

I just used the Who's on feature, and found a Google and Yahoo Slurp Spider were online viewing, could you explain to me who/what these are. They seem like rather out of place avatars for a Yes related site.

I'm guessing these are automated "bots" from search engines that browse sites, looking for things usable on their search engines.

I know we have them over on Yesfans, since we have an association there with Google - the site gets paid some meager money to allow the Google box, and the "spiders" to crawl the site. Looks like Ed may have set up a similar arrangement here.
